How to Identify Honey Locust

Start with the color split. Honey Locust shows strong contrast between a reddish-brown heartwood — sometimes orange- or cherry-toned — and a wide band of pale cream to bright golden-yellow sapwood. That warm heartwood against luminous golden sap is one of the most useful field cues, and it is exactly what this sample displays. The grain is fine and even, usually straight but sometimes interlocked, with tightly spaced growth rings and a natural luster.

Check the end grain. Honey Locust is ring-porous: each growth ring opens with a row of larger earlywood pores that then transition to much smaller, more sparsely scattered latewood pores, giving the flatsawn face its clear ring figure. Under a lens the latewood pores tend to sit in short wavy or diagonal bands, and the rays are fine and not conspicuous — unlike the bold, tall rays of oak, so a ring-porous wood without prominent ray fleck points away from oak.

Weigh it and press it. Honey Locust is heavy and dense, and it firmly resists a thumbnail — noticeably harder and heavier than cherry or the softer domestic hardwoods, in the same league as oak and hickory. Freshly cut it has little distinctive scent; it is not aromatic, which helps separate it from woods like cedar or the sometimes sweet-smelling locusts you might expect from the name.

The critical look-alike is Black Locust (Robinia pseudoacacia), constantly confused by name. Black Locust is heavier and harder still, and its heartwood is a distinctly yellow to olive or greenish-brown that fluoresces bright yellow-green under UV light and often ages toward russet — quite different from Honey Locust's warmer red-brown. Honey Locust also shows that pale golden sapwood band more prominently. Oak is separated by its large, conspicuous rays and coarser texture. Osage orange is far more vividly yellow-orange, and cherry is softer, lighter, and finer-pored without the ring-porous earlywood row. When the name says 'locust,' the color test — red-brown (Honey) versus yellow-green (Black) — is usually the fastest decider, with UV fluorescence confirming Black Locust.
