The heartwood is often only weakly separated from a slightly paler sapwood, so a board tends to read as fairly consistent in tone across its width, with a quiet, subtle figure rather than any bold ribbon, cathedral, or fleck pattern. This is a plain, dense-looking wood, not a flashy one.

Judge the weight and hardness. This is the strongest physical clue: Nux Vomica is distinctly hard and heavy in the hand, with a Janka figure on the order of 1,700 lbf. A fingernail or blade marks it only reluctantly, and it feels dense compared with medium utility hardwoods of similar color. A brown, fine-grained board that feels surprisingly heavy and hard fits the profile.

Read the end grain and grain direction. The grain is straight to slightly interlocked and the pores are small and fairly evenly distributed, giving a close, tight end-grain surface rather than the ring-porous rows of oak or ash or the large open pores of mahogany. There is no strong pleasant aroma; the far more telling chemical clue is taste — the wood and its extractives are intensely, persistently bitter owing to the strychnine and brucine alkaloids. Given the toxicity, do not deliberately taste it; but an accidentally noted, lingering bitterness is consistent with this species (and a reason to wash up).

Separating it from look-alikes is mostly about density, pore structure, and the bitter chemistry. Against ordinary medium-brown utility hardwoods (such as bahera or lighter Terminalia woods) Nux Vomica is denser, harder, and closer-grained. Against true snakewood (Brosimum guianense), with which it shares a trade name, the difference is obvious: real snakewood is far darker with dramatic black snake-skin markings and is even denser, whereas Nux Vomica is a plainer brown with only subtle figure. Against boxwood-like pale hardwoods it is distinguished by its browner color; against oak and ash by its diffuse rather than ring-porous end grain.
