Start with the face pattern, which is unmistakable. OSB shows a mosaic of overlapping rectangular wood strands — flakes an inch or more long — deliberately aligned so the surface layer runs mostly one direction and the core runs crossways. The color is pale tan to light straw, with each flake a slightly different shade, and there are small gaps and shallow voids where strands do not fully meet. There is no continuous grain, no ray figure, no book-match — just the directional flake mosaic. A faint waxy or resinous sheen and a printed grade stamp, grid, or logo on one face are common giveaways.

Look at the edge, which is one of the best diagnostics. A cut edge reveals the layered structure: you can see the strands stacked in cross-oriented plies, and the edge is rough, crumbly, and slightly voided rather than smooth. This layered strand edge separates OSB from solid lumber (which shows continuous end grain and growth rings) and from particleboard (whose edge is a uniform field of fine sawdust-like particles with no visible large flakes or layering).

Check weight and feel. OSB is a dense, heavy panel for its thickness because of the compressed strand-and-resin mat — noticeably heavier than the same thickness of solid softwood. The surface dents about as easily as a soft pine, and a fingernail or blade catches on the flake edges. Freshly cut OSB has a mild, slightly resinous or glue-like odor rather than the aromatic scent of a natural wood — the smell of the binder, not of cedar or pine heartwood.

The main look-alikes are other engineered panels. Plywood also has a layered edge, but its plies are continuous smooth veneers with visible wood grain, not chopped strands, and its faces show real grain or a veneer pattern. Particleboard/chipboard is made of much finer particles with a smooth, uniform, flake-free face and edge, and it is generally used indoors for furniture cores rather than structural sheathing. Waferboard, OSB's older cousin, uses larger square wafers laid randomly rather than oriented, so its flakes are bigger and not directionally aligned. MDF is a completely smooth, featureless brown board with no visible flakes at all. If you see cross-oriented flakes, a rough voided layered edge, and a grade stamp on a structural-thickness sheet, it is OSB.
