Start with the surface texture, because it is the giveaway. Particle board shows a uniform, speckled scatter of small wood chips, flakes, and sawdust set in cured resin — a light tan to pale-brown particulate field with no continuous grain, no growth rings, and no figure. If a flat panel looks like compressed granola or coarse breakfast cereal rather than wood with a running grain, it is particle board. Faced boards hide this under melamine, foil, or veneer, so always check a cut edge.

The cut edge is the most reliable diagnostic. A sawn or broken edge of particle board reveals a loose, crumbly, granular core of visible chips — often coarser and more open in the middle than at the dense skin faces. It does not show the smooth, homogeneous, almost cardboard-like edge of MDF, nor the stacked veneer lines of plywood, nor the large ribbon-like strands of OSB. Run a fingernail or a screw tip along the edge: particle board sheds crumbs easily.

Use weight and hardness as a cross-check. Particle board is dense and heavy for its strength — a panel feels substantial but flexes and gives at the edges, and a fastener or thumbnail pressed into a raw edge sinks and crumbles rather than biting into fiber. It has no scent of any particular species; freshly cut board smells faintly of wood dust and resin, sometimes with a slightly sharp or chemical note from the binder rather than any natural wood aroma.

Separate it from its look-alikes deliberately. MDF is the closest confusion once both are faced, but MDF's edge is smooth, dense, and uniform with no visible chips — particle board's edge is visibly granular. OSB (oriented strand board) uses large, flat, obviously oriented strands and wax, with a distinctly chunkier, layered look. Plywood shows alternating veneer plies on the edge and a real wood grain on the face. Hardboard/Masonite is thin, very dense, and smooth on one side with a screen texture on the back. When in doubt, the crumbly granular edge plus the speckled, grain-free face settles it.
