How to Identify Stained or Treated Hardwood

Start by deciding whether the color is natural or applied. Applied stain often pools slightly darker in the softer earlywood and open pores, giving an uneven, "outlined" look to the grain; it may show brush drag, wipe streaks, lap marks, or a color that stops abruptly at an edge or sits differently on end grain than on the face. On this sample the reddish-brown lets the radial and tangential grain read clearly through it — a hallmark of a penetrating stain rather than the wood's own heartwood color. A quick confirmation is to sand or scratch a hidden spot: if the wood beneath is much paler than the surface, the color is a finish, not the heartwood.
Once you suspect a stain, ignore the color and read the structure, because grain and pores survive staining. Examine the end grain with a hand lens. A ring of large pores at each growth ring means a ring-porous wood such as oak, ash, elm, or chestnut; small pores scattered evenly means a diffuse-porous wood such as maple, birch, poplar, beech, or cherry. Prominent rays, visible flecking on quartersawn faces, distinctive pore arrangement, and the overall coarseness or fineness of texture all point toward the underlying species regardless of the applied tone.
Use weight and hardness as corroborating clues. Stain adds essentially no mass, so a suspiciously light board stained to look like dense walnut or mahogany is a giveaway that a cheaper, lighter species lies beneath. Press a thumbnail into an inconspicuous area: a board that dents easily but is colored like a hard, premium wood is likely a soft utility hardwood dressed up by stain.
Scent can help but is unreliable once finished, since topcoats seal in natural odor and stains and solvents add their own smell. A freshly sanded hidden area may release the base wood's true aroma. Be alert for the sharper chemical or solvent smell of a preservative or fire-retardant treatment, and for a green, gray, or unusual tint at cut ends that suggests a chemical treatment rather than a decorative stain.
The classic confusions are cheaper hardwoods stained to mimic expensive ones: poplar, birch, alder, or soft maple finished as "walnut," "cherry," or "mahogany." Tell them apart by end grain and weight, not color — true walnut is a moderately heavy, diffuse-porous, chocolate-brown wood; real mahogany shows interlocked ribbon grain; genuine cherry darkens under light and carries gum flecks. If your reddish-brown board is light in the hand, uniform and flat in color, and its pore pattern doesn't match the wood it imitates, you are almost certainly looking at a stained substitute.
