Hunt for gum flecks. Scattered small brown-to-black gum specks, streaks, and pith flecks are a reliable cherry signature that most pale look-alikes lack. Confirm with weight, feel, and scent: cherry is moderate in weight and softer than hard maple or oak, so a thumbnail presses in more easily than you would expect of a premium wood, and freshly cut or sanded cherry gives off a mild, slightly sweet almond-like aroma typical of the Prunus genus.
