How to Identify Unknown Hardwood
A method for moving an unlabeled golden-brown, fine-ringed hardwood from 'unknown' to a named species using end grain, weight, scent, and look-alike comparison.

Start by accepting what the sample can and cannot tell you. A golden-brown to tan face with fine concentric growth rings narrows the field to temperate or subtropical hardwoods grown with seasonal growth, but it does not name the species — far too many woods share that description. The goal of identification is to add the diagnostic details a cross-section photo leaves out.
The most important step is to read the end grain under a 10x–14x hand lens on a cleanly sliced surface. Look at pore (vessel) arrangement: are large pores concentrated in a ring at the start of each growth ring (ring-porous, like oak, ash, elm), spread evenly (diffuse-porous, like maple, birch, cherry), or somewhere between (semi-ring-porous)? Note pore size, whether pores run solitary or in radial chains, and whether pale tyloses plug the vessels. Then look at the rays — their width and spacing, and whether they produce visible fleck on a quartered face. This pore-and-ray signature is far more diagnostic than color.
Next use the physical senses. Heft the piece: a heavy, dense sample points toward the harder end of the range and rules out light woods; a surprisingly light board rules out the dense ones. Test hardness with a thumbnail or a corner press. Smell freshly cut or sanded wood — many hardwoods have a telltale scent (cedar-like, rose-like, peppery, sour, or fragrant), and an absence of odor is itself a clue. Check whether the golden tone is stable or likely to darken or fade with light exposure.
Then compare against the usual look-alikes for a golden-brown, fine-grained hardwood. Cherry starts pinkish-tan and darkens to a warm reddish-brown with fine diffuse pores and faint flecks. Birch and maple are paler and diffuse-porous with very fine, inconspicuous rays. Oak and ash are ring-porous with coarse open early-wood pores and, in oak, bold tall rays — easy to separate on end grain. Warm honey-to-golden tropical and subtropical woods (for example teak-like or iroko-like timbers) can mimic the color but usually differ in oiliness, scent, weight, or interlocked grain. Because several of these overlap in color, the end-grain structure plus weight and scent — not the golden hue — is what actually settles the identification. When those still do not converge, documented provenance or an expert wood-anatomy examination is the reliable next step.
