Start by confirming it is a softwood at all. Look at the end grain with a loupe: softwoods (conifers) have no true vessels or pores — the surface is made of fine, uniform tracheids and looks smooth and even, often with visible growth-ring boundaries but no scattered open pores. If you can see distinct pores dotting the end grain, it is a hardwood, not a softwood. On this sample the plain, poreless character plus the pale cream-to-tan color and light, soft feel places it firmly in the softwood group.

Read the growth rings and figure. Most European softwoods show a clear contrast between pale, soft earlywood and a darker, denser latewood band; the sharpness of that contrast is a clue — spruce and fir tend to be gentle and even, while pine and especially larch show a bolder, harder latewood line. Wide, widely spaced rings mean fast growth (softer, lighter); tight rings mean slow growth (firmer, heavier). Check for resin: pines are typically resinous with visible resin canals and a piney scent, spruces are mildly resinous, and firs are essentially resin-free and odorless — sniffing a freshly cut surface is a genuinely useful test.

Weigh it in the hand and press it. All these softwoods are light and soft, but there is a spread: spruce and fir feel featherweight and dent under a thumbnail with ease, Scots pine is a little firmer, and larch is the heaviest and hardest of the common European conifers. Color helps too — spruce and fir are near-white to pale cream with little heartwood contrast, pine often has a distinctly yellow-to-reddish-brown heartwood against pale sapwood, and larch heartwood runs a warmer honey to reddish-brown.

Interpret the sample's specific cues. The prominent rays and radial checking here are worth using carefully: softwood rays are normally almost invisible, so their visibility, plus checks that radiate from the center along those rays, suggests a pith-near section that has dried under shrinkage stress. That tells you more about how the piece was cut and seasoned than about the species, so weight it less than pore structure, resin and ring contrast when narrowing down the tree.

The usual look-alikes are the softwoods themselves. Spruce vs fir: both are pale and plain, but spruce has small resin canals and a faint resinous smell while fir has none and is odorless. Pine stands out by its resin, stronger scent and more colored heartwood. Larch is the heaviest, with the hardest, most sharply marked latewood and a warm heartwood. The pale color also invites confusion with soft, plain hardwoods like poplar, basswood or alder — but those show scattered pores on the end grain and lack the ringed earlywood/latewood banding, which settles it quickly under a loupe.
