How to Identify White Ash

Start with the pore structure, because ash is strongly ring-porous. On the end grain you'll see a distinct ring of large, open early-wood pores at the start of each growth ring, followed by a denser band of late wood with much smaller pores — a clear alternation you can often see with the naked eye and easily under a lens. On flat-sawn faces this same structure reads as bold, oak-like cathedral figure with strongly marked growth rings and a medium-to-coarse, open texture (the ring-porous, medium-coarse grain seen on this sample).
Color is a supporting cue: sapwood is pale cream to light tan or nearly white and is often wide, while heartwood is a light-to-medium grayish-brown, sometimes with an olive or faint reddish tint. Overall the wood reads light and clean, without dark streaking. The single most useful test to separate ash from oak is the rays: ash has fine, inconspicuous rays and shows no ray fleck, whereas oak has large, prominent rays that produce conspicuous flecks on quartered faces. If a pale ring-porous board has bold ray fleck, it's oak; if the rays are invisible, it's ash.
Weigh it in the hand and feel the hardness. Ash is heavy and dense, resists a thumbnail press, and feels stiff and springy — noticeably more than a diffuse-porous wood of similar color. Freshly cut ash has a mild, nondescript to slightly sharp scent, not aromatic and not distinctive, so don't rely on smell.
The classic confusions are with other pale, ring-porous hardwoods. Oak is the main look-alike, separated by its bold rays as above. Hickory and pecan are also ring-porous and pale but tend to be even heavier and harder, with a somewhat less regular pore band and often a stronger contrast between white sapwood and tan heartwood. Elm is ring-porous too but its late-wood pores are arranged in distinctive wavy, wandering tangential bands (giving a partly interlocked, coarser figure), unlike ash's straighter grain and cleaner rings. Chestnut resembles ash in figure but is lighter in weight and softer. When the rays are fine and the grain is straight with a clean ring-porous band, ash is the answer.
