Hardness (Janka)
1350 lbf (Hard)
Durability & Decay Resistance
Very Durable. Exceptional resistance to decay, rot, and insect attack, largely due to closed cellular structures and high tannin content.
Value & Sustainability
- Estimated Market Value
- $4.00 to $8.00 per board foot for standard domestic lumber grades.
- Wood Age Estimate
- Estimated 10 to 30 years old, characteristic of modern architectural millwork or cabinetry with a stable, well-maintained surface patina.
- Sustainability Status
- Not listed on CITES appendices and generally evaluated as of least concern by the IUCN. Readily available from sustainably managed forests with FSC certification options.
Common Uses
Fine furniture, cabinetry, interior millwork, hardwood flooring, boat building, cooperage (barrels), and architectural joinery.
Geographic Origin
Eastern and Central North America
Workability
Generally works well with both hand and machine tools, though it can blunt cutting edges due to silica content. Glues, stains, and finishes well, but reacts with iron fasteners in wet conditions to form dark stains.
Finish Recommendations
Accepts a wide variety of finishes including oil-based polyurethanes, varnishes, lacquers, and penetrating oils. Grain filler may be used for a perfectly smooth, glass-like surface.
Notable Features
High tannin content provides natural water resistance and makes it ideal for liquid-tight containers like whiskey barrels. Contains closed cellular structures (tyloses) in the heartwood.
