Overview
Ceylon Oak (Schleichera oleosa) is a very hard, very heavy tropical hardwood cut from a medium-sized tree in the soapberry family (Sapindaceae), native across the Indian subcontinent, Sri Lanka, and into mainland and island Southeast Asia. Despite the trade name it is not a true oak (Quercus); the name reflects its strength and toughness rather than any botanical relationship. In its home range it is far better known as kusum, and the tree is economically important as a principal host for the lac insect (Kerria lacca) and as the source of kusum seed oil.
At a glance it is a dense, close-grained timber in medium to dark brown tones, with the fine, consistent grain seen on our planed sample. It ranks among the hardest and heaviest of commonly used South Asian woods, which shapes both its uses and the effort required to work it.
Characteristics
The heartwood is medium to dark brown, sometimes with a reddish or grayish cast, and darkens on exposure; the sapwood is paler — pinkish-gray to light brown — and not always sharply demarcated. The grain is fine, straight to somewhat interlocked or wavy, with a fine, even texture and a low to moderate natural luster. Figure is generally subdued and uniform, consistent with the smooth planed face on our sample.
This is a heavy, high-density wood, with an air-dry specific gravity commonly around 0.95–1.05 (roughly 950–1,050 kg/m³), so many pieces sink or barely float. Its Janka hardness is very high — on the order of 2,000 lbf or more — placing it firmly in the very hard range, well above white oak and comparable to other dense tropical timbers.
Durability is moderate. The heartwood has fair resistance to decay but is prone to insect and borer attack and is not considered reliably durable in exposed or ground-contact use. The wood is also notoriously difficult to season, tending to check, split, and warp as it dries, which limits its use for large, stable joinery.
Common Uses
Ceylon Oak's extreme hardness and toughness make it a traditional wood for heavy-duty, wear-resisting applications. Classic uses include tool and implement handles, pestles and mortars, sugarcane and oil crushers, rollers, cart axles and wheel parts, mallets, pounders, and other agricultural and mill machinery components.
It is also used for turnery, plane stocks and carpenters' tools, engraving and pattern work, and small strong articles where density and abrasion resistance matter. Because it burns hot and evenly, it is valued as fuelwood and for making high-grade charcoal. The tree's economic value in its native range often lies as much in the lac and the kusum seed oil it yields as in its sawn timber.
Working & Finishing
Ceylon Oak is difficult to work — a direct consequence of its density. It is hard on both hand and machine tools with a pronounced blunting effect, so sharp, carbide-tipped cutters and slow, patient feeds are needed. Interlocked or wavy grain can tear out on planing and moulding, and the wood should always be pre-bored before nailing or screwing to avoid splitting. It does turn well and takes a fine, smooth surface that finishes and polishes to a good luster once the effort of shaping is done.
Seasoning is the main practical challenge: the timber dries slowly and is very liable to surface checking, end splitting, and distortion, so slow, careful drying and generous end-sealing are important. Gluing is generally satisfactory on clean, freshly machined surfaces, though the dense, sometimes oily texture rewards good surface prep.
No severe toxicity is specifically associated with this species, but as with any dense tropical hardwood the fine dust can irritate the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract, so dust extraction and a respirator are advised. It is not a known potent sensitizer, and it carries no CITES restrictions.
Value & Availability
Ceylon Oak is essentially a regional-use and utility timber rather than an international cabinet wood. It is readily available within its native range in South and Southeast Asia, where it is used locally for implements, crushers, and fuel, but it is rarely exported and seldom stocked by general hardwood dealers outside Asia. When available abroad it tends to be sold as small turning or specialty blanks, and pricing is modest for such material rather than commanding an exotic premium.
The species is not listed under CITES and is widespread and common across its range, so it is not considered threatened; the IUCN treats it as of low conservation concern. Because it is often grown and managed for lac cultivation and seed oil as well as timber, sustainably sourced material is generally attainable, though formal FSC-certified stock is uncommon given its mostly local, informal supply chains.
