Workability
Generally works well with both hand and machine tools, though it can blunt cutting edges due to silica content and high density. Glues, stains, and finishes well, but requires pre-boring for nails and screws to prevent splitting.
Finish Recommendations
Takes stains, oils, varnishes, and polyurethanes exceptionally well. Water-based finishes prevent excessive yellowing if a natural look is desired.
Notable Features
Contains tyloses in the pores which make the wood water-resistant (traditionally used for liquid-holding barrels), high tannin content which reacts strongly with iron to cause staining.
