Grain Pattern
Prominent quarter-sawn face exhibiting distinct and striking medullary ray flecks (flakes), combined with straight to slightly irregular grain running down the length of the board.
Color & Appearance
Light to medium brown heartwood with a grayish or yellowish cast, and a lighter yellowish-white sapwood. It has a moderate natural luster and darkens slightly to a rich amber honey tone over time with UV exposure.

Workability
Generally favorable workability; responds well to hand and machine tools, though it can blunt cutting edges due to silica content and density. Steam bends exceptionally well. Glues, stains, and finishes satisfactorily, but reacts with iron to cause dark staining.
Finish Recommendations
Takes oil-based finishes, wiping varnishes, polyurethane, and lacquer very well. Water-based finishes can be used if applied carefully to avoid grain raising. Pre-staining with a conditioner or using a gel stain helps achieve an even color.
Notable Features
Contains closed cellular structures (tylose-filled pores) making it water-resistant and suitable for outdoor and liquid containment uses. High tannin content gives it good rot resistance and causes chemical reactions with ferrous metals.
