Common Uses
Fine furniture, cabinetry, flooring, veneer, musical instruments, turned objects, and specialty decorative items.
Geographic Origin
Central Africa (primarily Democratic Republic of the Congo, Republic of the Congo, and Cameroon)
Workability
Moderately difficult to work with due to its high hardness and density. It has a notable blunting effect on cutting edges due to silica content. Glues and finishes well, though natural oils can sometimes interfere.
Finish Recommendations
Takes a fine polish, but oil finishes or wipe-on polyurethane work exceptionally well. Grain filling may be desired due to the coarse texture.
Notable Features
Contains natural oils, very dense and heavy, high impact resistance, and can cause irritation (skin and respiratory) from dust due to natural alkaloid compounds.
