Grain Pattern
Straight to slightly wavy grain with coarse texture, distinguished by very large open pores and alternating bands of dark brown/black fibers and light-colored parenchyma tissue.
Color & Appearance
Heartwood is medium reddish-brown with dark, almost black streaks. Upon light exposure, it darkens to a deep chocolate brown or near-black tone. Sapwood is yellowish-white and clearly demarcated.

Workability
Challenging due to high density, splintering tendencies, and dulling effect on cutting tools. Splinters can cause localized infection. Glues reasonably well; finishes well after grain filling.
Finish Recommendations
Pore filler is recommended if a smooth sheen is desired. Responds exceptionally well to penetrating oil finishes (danish oil, tung oil) or polyurethane and clear lacquer.
Notable Features
Extremely distinct dark-and-light banding pattern (parenchyma bands), natural oils, high resistance to abrasion, sand dust can cause severe allergic reactions (respiratory/skin irritation).
