Workability
Generally easy to work with both hand and machine tools, though it has a tendency to split when nailed or screwed, requiring pre-boring. Reacts strongly to iron due to high tannin content.
Finish Recommendations
Accepts stains, oils, and varnishes exceptionally well. Water-based finishes prevent excessive yellowing, while oil-based finishes enhance the natural chatoyancy and grain depth.
Notable Features
Contains abundant tyloses in the heartwood pores which make it impervious to water (hence its historical use in ship building and casks). High tannin content causes black staining when exposed to ferrous metals in damp conditions.
