How to Identify European Ash

Start with the end grain, because ash is strongly ring-porous and it shows. Each growth ring opens with a band of large, open early-wood pores followed by much denser late-wood, so the rings appear as clear, distinct concentric bands — exactly as on this sample — and the pores of the early-wood are big enough to see with the naked eye or a hand lens. That coarse, contrasty ring structure carries onto the faces as bold striped or 'watery' figure on flatsawn boards and straight parallel lines on quartered stock.
Color is the next clue. Ash is pale — cream to light straw sapwood, often wide, grading to a light-to-medium brown heartwood that is not always sharply defined. Streaky dark heartwood is the 'olive ash' form of the same species. The wood has a coarse but even texture, straight grain, and only a low to medium sheen; it is not aromatic, giving off just a mild, nondescript scent when worked.
Weigh and press it. Ash is heavy and hard for a pale wood and resists a thumbnail, yet it feels springy rather than brittle — a useful confirmation given its reputation for toughness. On the end grain the early-wood pores are open and clearly ringed, with the rays fine and inconspicuous (no bold ray fleck).
The classic look-alikes are other ring-porous hardwoods. Oak has a similar bold ring-porous pattern but is set apart instantly by its large, tall rays that show as strong ray fleck on quartered faces and prominent radial lines on the end grain — ash has no such conspicuous rays. Elm is also ring-porous and pale-to-brown, but its early-wood pores sit in wavy, zig-zag bands and its grain is characteristically interlocked, versus ash's straighter, cleaner rings. Hickory resembles ash closely in look and toughness but is typically heavier and even harder. Chestnut shares the ringed look but is softer, lighter in weight and lacks ash's springy hardness. North American white and green ash are for practical purposes indistinguishable from European ash by eye — origin, not appearance, decides.
