Overview
Petrified Wood is not a wood you can saw or plane — it is fossilized wood in which the original organic tree tissue has been almost entirely replaced by minerals, chiefly silica (quartz, chalcedony, and opal). The word 'petrified' means 'turned to stone,' and that is literally what has happened: buried under sediment and cut off from oxygen, an ancient log had its cellulose and lignin dissolved and, molecule by molecule, replaced with dissolved mineral carried by groundwater. The result is a stone that keeps the exact shape and internal structure of the tree that died — often tens of millions of years ago.
Because the replacement is so faithful, the concentric annual growth rings, radial ray structure, bark texture, knots, and even individual cell walls of the original tree can survive in the mineralized copy. The sample here shows this clearly: cream and tan stone with brown mottling and crisp concentric growth rings radiating out just as they did in the living trunk. It is worked and valued as a decorative gemstone and lapidary material, not as lumber, though its origin as a tree places it in the reclaimed/fossil category.
Characteristics
The appearance is stony rather than woody. Colors come entirely from trace minerals present during fossilization: silica alone yields cream, white, tan, and gray; iron oxides add yellows, reds, oranges, and browns; manganese and carbon produce black, blue, and purple; copper and chromium can give greens. The cream-and-tan body with brown mottling on this sample is a classic silica-plus-iron palette. Surfaces polish to a high, glassy luster because the material is essentially quartz.
Structurally, the diagnostic feature is preserved tree anatomy: concentric annual growth rings, radial rays, and vessel or tracheid patterns frozen in stone. Density is that of rock — roughly 2.5–2.7 g/cm³, far heavier than any timber — and hardness is around 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, comparable to quartz and hard enough to scratch glass and steel. The conventional Janka test used for lumber does not apply; petrified wood will destroy woodworking blades rather than yield to them.
Durability is effectively permanent. Having already survived millions of years, it does not rot, burn, absorb water, or attract insects. Its only real weakness is brittleness: like other quartz, it is hard but not tough, and can fracture or chip with a conchoidal (glass-like) break if struck.
Common Uses
Petrified Wood is used as a decorative and ornamental stone rather than a construction timber. Rough logs and slabs are cut into bookends, clock faces, tabletops, coasters, tiles, sink basins, and display slices that show off the polished growth-ring pattern. Smaller pieces become cabochons, beads, spheres, pendants, and other lapidary and jewelry items.
Whole or partial fossil logs and stumps are prized as landscape features, garden accents, and museum and collector specimens. High-figure, brightly colored, or fully agatized or opalized material — such as the vivid pieces from Arizona's Petrified Forest region or Madagascar — is sought by mineral and gem collectors and can be sliced and polished into striking display pieces.
Working & Finishing
This is lapidary and stone work, not woodworking. Petrified Wood cannot be cut, planed, turned, or fastened with any wood tool — at Mohs 6.5–7 it is as hard as quartz and will chip carbide and shatter saw teeth. It is shaped only with diamond-tipped or silicon-carbide equipment: diamond slab and trim saws to cut it, then progressively finer diamond or carborundum abrasives on lapidary wheels or flat laps to grind and polish it to its characteristic glassy shine. It takes a superb polish because it is cryptocrystalline quartz.
Because it is brittle, it should be supported fully when sawn and worked with steady, cool, wet cutting to avoid heat cracking and conchoidal fracture. There is no gluing, staining, or wood finishing involved; a polished quartz surface needs no sealer.
Safety caution: cutting and grinding petrified wood dry generates fine crystalline silica dust, which is a serious respiratory hazard (silicosis risk) and a recognized carcinogen. Always cut and grind wet, use proper dust extraction, and wear a respirator rated for fine mineral dust and eye protection against sharp chips. The material itself is inert and non-toxic once polished.
Value & Availability
Availability ranges from common to collectible. Ordinary tan-and-brown tumbling rough and small slices are inexpensive and widely sold at rock shops, gem shows, and online; fully agatized, brightly colored, large, or highly figured specimens — polished slabs, big log rounds, opalized pieces — command much higher prices as gem and decorative material, scaling with size, color, figure, and polish quality.
Petrified Wood is not CITES-listed and is not a wood-trade or FSC concern, since it is a mineral rather than harvested timber. The real regulatory issue is collecting location: gathering petrified wood is prohibited in many protected areas — most famously it is illegal to remove any material from Petrified Forest National Park in Arizona — and various public lands, states, and countries restrict or ban collection and export. Reputable material comes from private claims and licensed commercial sites, so buyers should favor legally sourced stock.
