"Weathered/Dead Wood" is not a single botanical species but a condition category: timber recovered from trees that died standing, fell and lay exposed, or washed up as driftwood, and then aged for years under sun, rain, fungi, and insects before being reclaimed. The underlying wood may be almost any softwood or hardwood — pine, fir, spruce, oak, and poplar are common sources — but by the time it is salvaged it has taken on a set of shared surface traits that override the original species character.

Sound-looking sections can still be firm and usable; punky, crumbling, or heavily galleried zones are not to be trusted in load-bearing roles.

Working weathered/dead wood is unpredictable and demands caution. Density varies within a single board — a plane or chisel may skate over hard latewood and then dive into punky, decayed early wood, causing tear-out and crumbling. Insect tunnels and voids can hide inside apparently solid stock, so cuts and joints should be planned around them, and blades checked for embedded grit, nails, or stones, which are common in salvaged and driftwood material and will destroy edges. Sharp tooling, light cuts, and slow feed rates give the best results; a stabilizing resin soak helps friable turning blanks hold together on the lathe.
Gluing and finishing are workable but variable: porous, weathered surfaces drink up glue and finish unevenly, so consolidation with thin epoxy or sanding sealer before finishing is often worthwhile. Voids and galleries are frequently filled with epoxy for both strength and looks. The soft, silvered patina sands away easily, so a light touch preserves the character that makes the wood desirable.
Health cautions matter here more than with fresh lumber. Dead and decayed wood carries fungal spores and mold; blue-stain and spalting fungi in particular mean the dust and the raw material can provoke respiratory irritation and allergic reactions, and spalted stock should be handled with a mask and good dust extraction, ideally cutting outdoors. Driftwood and marine salvage may hold absorbed salt (which corrodes fasteners and dulls tools) and chemical contamination; reclaimed timber can carry old finishes, preservatives, or lead paint.
