Overview

Giant Sequoia is the wood of Sequoiadendron giganteum, the largest tree species on Earth by volume and one of the longest-lived. It is a softwood (a conifer in the cypress family) and is a close cousin of, but distinct from, the taller Coast Redwood (Sequoia sempervirens). The two are often both loosely called "redwood," so the trade name Sierra Redwood is used to keep them apart.

The species grows in scattered groves on the western slopes of California's Sierra Nevada, mostly at mid elevations. Almost all of these groves are now protected within national parks, monuments, and forests, so the tree is not a commercial timber source today. The wood most people encounter is salvage: reclaimed stock, historic-logging remnants, and material from old stumps and downed trees.

The sample shown is typical of the heartwood — a warm golden-brown to tan color with clearly defined concentric growth rings and a sharp boundary between the darker heart and the paler sapwood.

Characteristics

The heartwood ranges from light golden-brown and tan to a warm reddish- or pinkish-brown, deepening with age and light exposure. The sapwood is a narrow, pale creamy-white band, sharply demarcated from the heart. Grain is generally straight, the texture is coarse and uneven, and the wide, well-marked concentric growth rings give the wood a strongly lined, rustic figure. Luster is low to moderate.

Density is very low. Giant Sequoia is a light, soft wood — roughly 26–29 lb/ft³ (about 420–460 kg/m³) dry — and its Janka hardness sits near 480 lbf, firmly in the soft range and comparable to Coast Redwood or eastern white pine. The wood is also somewhat brittle and low in strength for its bulk, so it dents, crushes, and splits easily.

Where it excels is natural durability. The heartwood is rich in tannins and is rated very durable, with excellent resistance to decay, fungal rot, and insect attack even without treatment — the same chemistry that lets standing sequoias survive fire and centuries of exposure. The pale sapwood, as always, is not durable.

Common Uses

Because living trees are protected and the wood is soft and brittle, Giant Sequoia has never been a mainstream lumber species. Historically, 19th-century logging of the groves proved wasteful and disappointing: the huge trunks often shattered on felling, and the timber that survived was cut mainly into low-value products such as shingles, shakes, fence posts, grape stakes, and fencing — uses that leaned on its rot resistance rather than its strength.

Today the wood is a niche and largely reclaimed material. Salvaged sequoia is used for rustic outdoor and garden work (posts, planters, fencing, and trim), decorative and craft items, boxes, turned pieces, and slab or live-edge projects that show off its color and bold ring figure. It is valued far more for appearance, durability, and provenance than for any structural role.

Working & Finishing

Giant Sequoia is easy to cut and works readily with both hand and machine tools thanks to its softness and straight grain. That same softness is the main hazard: it is weak and brittle, so it crushes under clamps and fasteners, tears out around knots, and can split when nailed near an edge — pre-drilling and sharp, keen-edged tools give the cleanest results. It planes and sands easily but the coarse, uneven texture can fuzz, so finish with fine grits.

It glues and finishes well and holds paint and stain adequately, though the open, ringy texture may need a filler or sanding sealer for a smooth surface. Nail and screw holding power is modest because of the low density.

On safety: Giant Sequoia has no notable systemic toxicity, but like Coast Redwood and other cypress-family conifers its fine dust is a known respiratory and sinus irritant and can cause sensitization in some workers, so dust collection and a respirator are sensible. The heartwood's high tannin content can also stain in contact with iron and moisture and may raise fasteners' corrosion risk. There are no CITES or federal endangered-species restrictions on the wood itself.

Value & Availability

Giant Sequoia is scarce and irregular in the market. It is not commercially logged, so supply comes almost entirely from salvage, reclamation, and occasional storm- or hazard-felled trees; you will find it through specialty and reclaimed-wood dealers, slab yards, and craft suppliers rather than as standard dimensional lumber. Availability is unpredictable and boards are often character-grade, so exact pricing varies widely — expect specialty/reclaimed pricing well above common construction softwoods, driven by rarity and provenance rather than working performance.

The species is not listed on any CITES appendix, but the living groves are legally protected within California's parks, monuments, and national forests, and the tree is a conservation priority (it is classed as endangered in the wild owing to its very limited natural range and fire/climate pressures). Ethically sourced material should be reclaimed or salvage stock with documented origin; there is no meaningful FSC production forestry for this species.

Is Giant Sequoia the same as Redwood?

Not quite. Giant Sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum) and Coast Redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) are related cypress-family conifers, both loosely called "redwood," but they are different species. Giant Sequoia is the more massive tree of the Sierra Nevada; Coast Redwood is the taller coastal tree. The trade name "Sierra Redwood" is used to distinguish the two.

Can you legally buy Giant Sequoia wood?
