Overview
Larch is the timber of Larix decidua, the European or common larch, an unusual conifer that drops its needles each autumn like a broadleaf tree. It grows in the mountains of central Europe — most characteristically the Alps and the Carpathians — where cold, high-altitude sites produce slow, steady growth and the tight ring structure the wood is known for.
Among softwoods, larch stands out for being noticeably heavier, harder, and more decay-resistant than the spruces and pines it grows alongside. The sample shown displays the paler face of the wood: a fine, even, concentric ring pattern in cream-to-tan tones, the signature of a slow-grown alpine tree. In heartwood-rich boards the color runs warmer, toward honey and reddish-brown.
Characteristics
Freshly worked larch shows a clear contrast between a narrow, pale cream to yellowish-white sapwood and a warmer heartwood that ranges from honey-tan to a resinous reddish- or russet-brown, deepening on exposure. The sample here sits in the paler cream-to-tan range, with extremely fine, closely spaced growth rings from slow annual growth. Grain is straight, the texture fine and fairly even, and the wood carries a modest natural luster; the transition from soft, light earlywood to dense, darker latewood in each ring gives it a pronounced, decorative ring figure.
It is dense for a conifer, averaging roughly 37 lb/ft³ (about 590 kg/m³) at 12% moisture, with a Janka hardness in the region of 1,070 lbf — hard by softwood standards, comparable to or above Douglas fir and well above spruce or white pine. The heartwood is resinous and rated moderately durable to durable for decay resistance, which is the trait that defines its use; the pale sapwood is not durable and is readily attacked. Larch is prone to ring shake and to knots, and its high resin content is a constant working consideration.
Common Uses
Larch's calling card is exterior use. It is a leading species for timber cladding and siding, decking, garden and street furniture, fencing, and shingles, where its natural resin and dense latewood let it weather to a silvery gray without preservative treatment. It has a long history in boatbuilding — planking and framing — and in ground- and water-contact work such as posts, piles, and the famous submerged foundations of Venice.
Indoors it is used for flooring, staircases, paneling, joinery, and framing, and its strong ring figure makes attractive rotary-cut and sliced veneer and plywood faces. It is a common structural and utility softwood in its native range, turning up in construction lumber, pallets, mine timbers, and, historically, telegraph poles and railway sleepers.
Working & Finishing
Larch works reasonably well but demands respect for its density and resin. It cuts and machines cleanly when tooling is sharp, though it is harder on edges than spruce or pine and the dense latewood bands can cause uneven planing or ridging on flat-sawn faces. Knots are frequent and hard, and the wood tends to split when nailed near ends or edges, so pre-drilling and careful fastener placement pay off. Ring shake — separation along the growth rings — is a known defect to watch for in the log and the board.
The abundant resin can gum up saw blades and sandpaper and may bleed at knots, sometimes interfering with adhesion; sealing knots and giving finishes time to cure helps. Glue-up and finishing are otherwise satisfactory, and the wood holds paint and stain acceptably, though resin and the hard/soft ring structure can make staining a little uneven.
Larch is not considered a toxic timber, but its dust and resin can cause skin, eye, and respiratory irritation, and resin (colophony) is a recognized contact allergen for sensitive individuals, so dust extraction and a mask are sensible. The species carries no CITES listing and is not endangered.
Value & Availability
In Europe, larch is common, affordably priced, and easy to source as construction lumber, cladding, decking, and joinery stock; it sits in the moderate tier — costlier than commodity spruce/pine (whitewood) but far cheaper than durable tropical hardwoods, which it is often chosen to replace outdoors. Wide, clear, slow-grown alpine boards command a premium over fast-grown or knotty plantation material. Outside Europe it is less widely stocked and prices reflect import and specialty status; the closely related Siberian larch is often sold interchangeably for cladding.
The species is abundant and widely planted, with no conservation concerns — it is not on any CITES appendix — and FSC- and PEFC-certified larch is readily available from managed European forests.

Color depends on how much sapwood versus heartwood the board contains and how slowly the tree grew. Sapwood and slow-grown alpine stock read pale cream to tan, as in this sample, while resin-rich heartwood runs honey to reddish-brown and darkens further with exposure to light and air.
Is larch difficult to work with?
It is straightforward but not effortless. It is harder on tools than most softwoods, its knots are hard, it can split when nailed, and its resin gums up blades and sandpaper and can bleed at knots. Sharp tooling, pre-drilling, and sealing knots before finishing solve most of these issues.
