This sample is an unidentified conifer — a softwood cut from one of the many needle-bearing, cone-bearing trees of North America. That group covers the pines (Pinus), spruces (Picea), true firs (Abies), Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga), hemlocks (Tsuga), larches (Larix), and cedars, which together supply the overwhelming majority of the continent's construction and utility lumber. Because pale, straight-grained softwoods from several of these genera look and work very much alike, they are routinely milled and sold without an exact species name — the lumber trade's 'SPF' (spruce-pine-fir) and 'whitewood' grades are exactly this kind of mixed, unidentified softwood.

Working & Finishing
Conifer softwood is among the friendliest material to work. It cuts, planes, drills, and carves easily with both hand and machine tools, holds nails and screws well, and glues reliably. Because it is soft, sharp tooling matters: dull edges crush and tear the pale earlywood, and tear-out is common around the numerous knots, so keen blades and care near knots give the cleanest result. Resinous species can gum up sandpaper and cutters and may bleed pitch through a finish, for which a shellac or knotting-solution seal over knots is standard practice.
Finishing calls for attention: the alternating soft and hard grain absorbs stain unevenly and can blotch, so a sanding sealer, wash coat, or gel stain is commonly used to even it out. The wood takes paint particularly well, which suits its heavy use in painted joinery and trim.
On safety, softwood dust is a recognised respiratory and skin irritant; pine and other conifer dusts and resins (terpenes) are documented causes of allergic contact dermatitis and, in sensitive individuals, occupational asthma.
