Value & Sustainability
- Estimated Market Value
- $4.00 - $7.00 per board foot depending on grade and region.
- Wood Age Estimate
- Modern/Recently manufactured (less than 5-10 years) based on the lack of deep oxidation or patina and the presence of modern mechanical fasteners.
- Sustainability Status
- Least Concern (IUCN); widely available and not CITES listed. FSC certification is common.
Common Uses
Flooring, furniture, cabinetry, interior trim, paneling, and veneer.
Geographic Origin
Northeastern United States and Southeastern Canada.
Workability
Easy to work with both hand and machine tools. It has moderate shrinkage and can be prone to splintering if tools are dull. Glues, stains, and finishes well.
Finish Recommendations
Takes stains exceptionally well due to open pores. Polyurethane and lacquer are common for durability. A grain filler can be used if a perfectly smooth surface is desired.
Notable Features
Distinctive 'vinegar' scent when being worked. Large, open pores can be felt on the surface of the boards. High tannin content can cause dark staining if in contact with iron and moisture.
