Overview
Red Mangrove is the timber of Rhizophora mangle, the iconic stilt-rooted tree of the family Rhizophoraceae that fringes tidal shorelines throughout the Caribbean, Central America, and the tropical coasts of the Americas and West Africa. It is the classic 'walking' mangrove, standing on arching prop roots in the seaward, most flood-prone zone of the tidal forest, where it colonizes soft saline mud that almost no other tree can hold. Common names such as mangle rojo and mangle colorado refer to the reddish inner bark and heartwood rather than the outer wood.
At a glance this is a dense, heavy, slow-grown hardwood with a very fine, even texture. The sample here reads light tan to tan-brown with fine, tightly spaced grain — the signature of a small tree that adds wood slowly in a stressful intertidal setting. Characteristics
The observed sample is light tan to tan-brown with a very fine, dense, even texture and only modest color variation across the face. Freshly cut heartwood of Rhizophora mangle tends to be redder and darker — the reddish tone that gives the tree its name — while sapwood and weathered or dried surfaces read paler tan, so expect a wood that runs from reddish-brown down to the light tan-brown seen here depending on the cut and its exposure. Grain is generally straight to slightly irregular, the luster is modest, and there is little in the way of bold decorative figure; the appeal is the fineness and density rather than dramatic pattern.
This is a genuinely dense, hard timber. A precise published Janka figure for Rhizophora mangle is not well established in the general trade, but the species is consistently heavy, with a high specific gravity, and an estimated Janka on the order of 2,000 lbf or more places it firmly in the hard range. It is correspondingly strong, stiff, and resistant to surface wear, and it sinks or barely floats when green.
Natural durability is relative for a mangrove. The heartwood is reasonably resistant to decay and performs well in the wet, brackish conditions the tree grows in, which is why it has long served in ground and water contact locally. It is not, however, immune to marine borers over the long term, and the paler sapwood is far less durable and vulnerable to borers and staining fungi until seasoned.
Common Uses
Red Mangrove has historically been a working timber of the coast rather than a furniture wood. Its strength, hardness, and tolerance of wet, brackish ground suit it to pilings, jetty and dock members, house posts, fence posts, boat frames and ribs, and other heavy construction where contact with water or damp soil is unavoidable. Its density also lends it to tool handles, small turnery, and other dense-wood applications where local supply allows.
Beyond sawn and round timber, the species is best known regionally for two non-lumber products. The bark is exceptionally rich in tannins and has been a traditional source for tanning leather and dyeing. The dense wood also makes excellent fuelwood and charcoal, burning hot and long, and mangrove charcoal has been a traditional coastal commodity. Because clear, large, defect-free boards are hard to obtain from a small, often crooked intertidal tree, Red Mangrove rarely reaches joinery or cabinet markets in board form.
Working & Finishing
As a dense, hard timber, Red Mangrove is demanding to work. It is heavy going on hand tools and blunts cutting edges relatively quickly, so sharp, carbide-tipped tooling and patience pay off. Slightly irregular grain can tear if planed aggressively, so keen edges and slow feed rates give the cleanest surface. The wood can be brittle and prone to splitting when nailed, so pre-drilling for fasteners is advisable. Once worked, the fine, even texture takes a smooth surface and a good polish.
Drying should be done slowly and carefully. Like many dense tropical hardwoods it is liable to check, distort, and case-harden if seasoned too fast, and salt content picked up from the tidal environment can complicate drying and later corrode nearby ferrous fasteners and tooling. Gluing is generally sound on clean, well-prepared surfaces, and the wood finishes well with standard treatments once sanded.
On safety, no severe or well-documented toxicity is specific to Rhizophora mangle, but as with all dense tropical hardwoods the fine dust can irritate the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract and may sensitize some workers over repeated exposure. The high tannin content can also stain skin and react with steel and some finishes. Use effective dust extraction, a respirator, and eye protection when machining or sanding.
Value & Availability
This is not a mainstream commercial export timber. Red Mangrove is used chiefly on a local and regional basis near where it grows, and it is uncommon to find it offered as graded sawn lumber in the international specialty market; when available it comes mostly as poles, posts, tannin bark, or fuel and charcoal rather than boards. There is no established premium board price, and value is essentially a function of local availability rather than a global market.
Sustainability is the central consideration. Mangrove forests are ecologically critical — protecting coastlines, storing carbon, filtering water, and nurturing fisheries — and they are under heavy pressure from clearing, aquaculture, and coastal development throughout the tropics. Rhizophora mangle itself is not listed on CITES and is generally assessed as a species of lower conservation concern (Least Concern on the IUCN Red List), but mangroves are legally protected in many jurisdictions, including Florida and much of the Caribbean and Central America, where cutting or removing them is restricted or prohibited. Any use should rely on legally and responsibly sourced material, and non-mangrove alternatives are strongly preferable where a durable timber is simply needed.
