Overview

Red Alder is the common trade name for the wood of Alnus rubra, the largest and most commercially important alder in North America. It is the signature hardwood of the Pacific Northwest coastal forests, growing abundantly from southern Alaska down through British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, and into northern California, usually on moist, disturbed ground near streams and clear-cuts.

Despite being a true botanical hardwood, alder is soft, light, and mild-mannered, which has made it one of the most heavily used utility and furniture hardwoods on the West Coast. The name "red" comes not from the standing tree's dull grey bark but from the way the freshly cut wood flushes a bright orange to rust-orange as it oxidizes in the air — exactly the reddish-orange color and fine, even grain seen on the sample here.

Characteristics

Alder has very little distinction between heartwood and sapwood; both are a light tan to pale reddish-brown. When first cut the surface is nearly white or pale straw, then rapidly deepens to the bright reddish-orange to rust-orange blush visible on the sample as air and light oxidize it. The grain is typically straight with a fine, uniform texture and a low-to-moderate luster; annual rings are visible but subtle, and the wood is generally plain-figured, though burl, curl, and knotty ("knotty alder") stock occurs.

It is a diffuse-porous hardwood of low density, averaging roughly 28–30 lb/ft³ (about 450–480 kg/m³) at 12% moisture. The Janka hardness is only around 590 lbf, placing it firmly in the soft range — softer than cherry, birch, or maple, and comparable to many softwoods. That softness makes it easy to work but prone to denting. Natural durability is poor: the wood is non-durable to perishable, with little decay or insect resistance, and it is not suited to exterior or ground-contact use.

Common Uses

Red Alder's low cost, ready availability, and easy machining make it the Pacific Northwest's go-to secondary and furniture hardwood. It is used extensively for cabinets, doors, furniture, and millwork — "knotty alder" in particular is a popular rustic-look choice for cabinet doors and interior trim — as well as for turned items, carvings, toys, and pattern-making.

It is a mainstay of the sliced-veneer and plywood-core trade and takes stain readily, so it is frequently finished to imitate cherry, walnut, or mahogany. Alder is also well known in the music world as a primary tonewood for solid-body electric guitar bodies, prized for its light weight and balanced tone. Beyond woodworking, alder chips and chunks are a favorite smoking wood for salmon and other foods.

Working & Finishing

Alder is a pleasure to work and forgiving for beginners. It cuts, planes, turns, and carves cleanly with both hand and machine tools, sands to a smooth surface, and its softness means low tool wear. It glues easily and holds screws and nails adequately, though its softness means fasteners can strip or split near edges, so pilot holes help.

It accepts stain and finish very evenly — one of the reasons it is so often stained to mimic pricier woods — and paints well. Because it is soft and light-colored it can blotch slightly with heavy pigment stains, so a conditioner or wash-coat is worth using for a uniform tone.

Alder is generally regarded as a low-hazard wood to work; it is not known to be toxic and severe reactions are uncommon, but like any wood its fine sanding dust can irritate the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract, so use dust collection and a mask. The species carries no CITES listing and no endangered-species restrictions.

Value & Availability

Red Alder is inexpensive and abundant, and within the Pacific Northwest it is one of the most affordable furniture-grade hardwoods available, typically priced well below cherry, walnut, or maple. Clear grades and knotty grades are both readily stocked as lumber, veneer, and pre-made cabinet components; wide clear boards and figured or burl stock command higher prices. Outside its home region it costs more, as it must be shipped from the West Coast.

The tree is a fast-growing, short-lived pioneer species that regenerates aggressively after logging and fire, so it is considered a highly sustainable and renewable resource. It is not threatened, appears on no CITES appendix, and FSC-certified alder is available.

Why is it called Red Alder if the tree looks grey?

The name refers to the wood, not the bark. Freshly cut alder starts out pale, almost white, then flushes a bright orange to rust-red within minutes to hours as it oxidizes in the air. Cut bark and sapwood also stain reddish, which is where the "red" in Alnus rubra comes from.
