Overview
"Eucalyptus" is not one wood but a very large genus of Australian hardwood trees — several hundred species, many of them commercially logged and plantation-grown around the world. Because so many species are marketed together under trade umbrellas, a board labeled simply "Eucalyptus" or "gum" could be any of dozens of timbers, and properties swing widely from one species to the next. The one constant is that these are true, dense hardwoods from the myrtle family (Myrtaceae).
The genus is native to Australia, where eucalypts dominate the forests, though fast-growing species such as E. globulus (blue gum) and E. grandis (rose gum) are now plantation staples in Brazil, Uruguay, Chile, South Africa, Portugal, Spain, and Southeast Asia. Working & Finishing

The dense red species are hard on cutting edges, can be difficult to plane cleanly where grain interlocks, and often need pre-drilling for nails and screws. The biggest practical challenge is movement: eucalyptus is notorious for warping, cupping, checking, and internal honeycomb if it is dried too quickly, and it benefits from careful, slow seasoning and acclimatization before use. Once dry and stable it glues and finishes well and holds fasteners strongly. On durability caution: only the naturally durable species belong outdoors — do not assume a pale plantation gum will resist rot in ground contact.
Toxicity: eucalyptus is not a CITES-listed or heavily hazardous timber, but the fine dust is a recognized respiratory and skin irritant and has been reported to cause sensitization in some workers, so use dust extraction and a respirator. The genus contains aromatic oils; freshly cut wood can smell faintly medicinal, and the oils may occasionally slow the cure of some finishes.

Availability depends entirely on which eucalyptus you mean. Plantation species (blue gum, rose gum) and reconstituted eucalyptus flooring are widely and cheaply available worldwide and sit in the budget-to-moderate price tier.
