Overview
Red Gum is the timber of Eucalyptus camaldulensis, better known as River Red Gum, the sprawling, hollow-limbed eucalypt that lines the Murray-Darling and countless inland watercourses across Australia. It is one of the most widely distributed of all eucalypts and a defining tree of the Australian riverine landscape, and its timber has long been valued for heavy construction, sleepers, and rustic furniture.
The wood is best known for a rich, deep-red heartwood, but the sample here sits at the pale end of the log: a light tan to cream stock — sapwood or paler boards — showing interlocked grain, a fine and uniform texture, and subtle grain figure with visible medullary rays. At a glance the species is a heavy, dense, hard hardwood that ranges from these pale tones through to blood-red and dark brown depending on where in the tree the board is cut.
Characteristics
Color in this species spans a wide range. The heartwood is typically a deep red to reddish-brown, often streaked and marbled, while the sapwood is a distinctly paler light tan to pale cream — the tone seen on this sample. The grain is characteristically interlocked, and the texture is fine and fairly uniform, giving a moderate natural luster and, on quartered faces, subtle ribbon figure and visible ray patterning. Gum veins, pockets, and pin knots are common and are part of the wood's rustic character.
It is a genuinely dense, hard timber. Air-dry density runs roughly 55–65 lb/ft3 (about 900–1,050 kg/m3), and Janka hardness falls in the region of 1,600–1,900 lbf, placing it firmly in the hard range — well above oak. The interlocked grain contributes toughness but also makes the wood prone to movement.
Natural durability is a strong point of the red heartwood, which is rated durable to very durable and resistant to decay, making it a traditional choice for sleepers, poles, and ground-contact work. The pale sapwood, by contrast, is not durable and is susceptible to insect and lyctid borer attack. The species is notably prone to surface checking, end splitting, and distortion during drying, which is its main working limitation.
Common Uses
Red Gum's density and durable red heartwood have made it a classic heavy-duty timber: railway sleepers, bridge and wharf timbers, poles, piles, fence posts, and other ground-contact and structural work where decay resistance matters. It is also a well-regarded flooring and decking timber, valued for hardness and rich color.
The more figured and colorful stock is used for rustic and feature furniture, tabletops, benchtops, joinery, and turning, where gum veins and marbled reds are prized as character. Burl and heavily figured pieces are sought after by turners and for decorative work. It is also one of Australia's premier firewood species and, historically, a charcoal wood.
Working & Finishing
Red Gum is hard, heavy, and demanding to work. Its density and interlocked grain blunt edges moderately and can cause tear-out on planed and moulded surfaces, so sharp tooling, reduced cutter angles, and careful feed direction help. It is prone to checking and distortion, so it must be dried slowly and worked with an eye to movement. Pre-drilling is needed for nails and screws, and the wood can be difficult to glue cleanly because of its density, gum content, and any oils or extractives at the surface.
Despite the effort, it turns and finishes well, taking a good polish and showing its color to advantage under oil and film finishes. Gum veins may need filling for a smooth surface.
On health and safety, eucalyptus dust is a recognized respiratory irritant, and fine hardwood dust in general is best treated as hazardous, so use effective dust extraction and a respirator. There are no notable systemic toxicity concerns reported for the wood, though sensitive individuals can experience skin, eye, and respiratory irritation from the dust.
Value & Availability
In Australia, Red Gum is readily available as a native hardwood — sold as sawn timber, flooring, sleepers (including reclaimed sleepers), turning blanks, and slabs — and it is a common recycled and salvaged timber given its long history in old bridges and rail lines. Outside Australia it is far less common as lumber but is grown very widely as a fast-growing plantation species for fuel, pulp, and general timber, so plantation-grown stock circulates in many countries.
Pricing is moderate: as a domestic Australian hardwood it is affordable for utility grades and sleepers, with clean, figured, or wide-slab feature stock commanding higher prices. Eucalyptus camaldulensis is not CITES-listed and is not an endangered species — globally it is one of the most abundant and widely planted eucalypts. Responsibly sourced and reclaimed material is easy to find; buyers concerned with provenance can look for salvaged sleeper stock or certified plantation timber.
