This is a pale, straight-grained Eastern North American hardwood that has not been narrowed to a single species: the sample reads as either soft maple (Acer rubrum, A. saccharinum, and related red/silver maples) or ash (Fraxinus americana, F. pennsylvanica and kin). Both are widespread, commercially important trees of the eastern United States and Canada, and in pale, plainsawn stock the two are genuinely easy to confuse — hence the combined identity here.
At a glance the wood is light in tone — pale cream to light tan — with a fine, straight grain and visible medullary rays on the sample. Soft maple is a diffuse-porous wood with a fine, even texture and subtle figure; ash is a coarser, ring-porous wood with pronounced growth-ring lines. Where a board is pale and quartersawn, however, the ray flecks and even color can blur the distinction, which is exactly why a definitive species call is deferred until pore structure can be read on clean end grain.
Characteristics

Both soft maple and ash are rated non-durable to perishable, with little resistance to decay or insect attack, and both are best kept to dry interior use unless treated. Both candidate species are workhorse domestic hardwoods, and the sample's likely applications span their shared uses. Working & Finishing
Both woods work well, though they differ in feel. Soft maple is easy to machine and cut, planes and turns cleanly, and is more forgiving than hard maple; it can burn if fed too slowly and, like all maples, benefits from sharp tooling and a conditioner before staining to avoid blotch. Ash machines well too but is coarser and more open-grained, so it may need grain filler for a glass-smooth finish; it is one of the best temperate woods for steam-bending, which is central to its use in chairs and sports goods.
Both glue, screw, and nail soundly (pre-boring near ends is wise in denser ash), and both accept stains and clear finishes readily — ash's open pores take stain more strongly along the growth rings, while maple's tight surface finishes more evenly. Neither is classed as a toxic wood, but the fine dust of both maple and ash is a recognized respiratory irritant and sensitizer, and ash dust in particular has been associated with allergic and asthmatic reactions in sensitive workers. Use dust extraction and a mask. There are no CITES listings or trade restrictions on either species.
Value & Availability
Both soft maple and ash are common, moderately priced domestic hardwoods, generally more affordable than hard maple, cherry, or walnut. Soft maple is one of the better values in North American lumber, widely stocked as boards, turning blanks, and veneer. Ash has historically been abundant and inexpensive as well, and either identity puts this sample in the mid-to-low range of domestic hardwood pricing rather than the premium tier.
Neither species is CITES-listed or considered a restricted timber, and FSC-certified stock of both is available.
