Overview

Olive is the wood of Olea europaea, the same long-lived evergreen tree that yields table olives and olive oil across the Mediterranean and North Africa. Because the tree is grown chiefly for its fruit, most olive lumber comes from old, exhausted, or storm-damaged orchard trees rather than from timber plantations, which is why it reaches the market mainly as small turning blanks, offcuts, and craft stock rather than as long boards.

The tree is short, gnarled, and heavily branched, so clear straight lumber of any length is scarce; the interest of the wood lies instead in its color and figure. The sample shown is typical: a light tan-to-cream body with prominent growth rings and irregular darker heartwood streaking. Overall it is a heavy, hard, fine-textured wood with a natural luster and a wild, painterly grain pattern that woodworkers seek out for small showpieces.

Characteristics

The sapwood is pale cream to light yellowish-tan, while the heartwood is a warmer tan-to-brown streaked with darker chocolate, gray, and sometimes greenish or reddish veining. Growth rings are prominent, and the contrast between pale ground and dark streaks gives olive its signature marbled look. The grain runs straight to strongly irregular and often interlocked, especially near crotches, burls, and root sections, producing wild swirls, curl, and mottle. The texture is fine and even with a natural oily luster that polishes to a glassy surface.

Olive is heavy and dense — roughly 60 lb/ft³ (about 950 kg/m³) at 12% moisture — with a Janka hardness near 2,700 lbf, placing it firmly in the hard range, comparable to hard maple or hickory. It is rated durable to moderately durable for decay resistance, but it is unstable while drying: it moves a great deal, tends to check, split, and warp, and is prone to insect attack in the sapwood, so it is treated as an indoor decorative wood rather than a structural or exterior timber.

Common Uses

Olive is overwhelmingly a small-scale and decorative wood. It is a favorite of turners and carvers for bowls, goblets, pens, boxes, spinning tops, and ornaments, where a single small blank can show off dramatic figure. Its density, fine texture, and food-friendly oiliness also make it a traditional choice for kitchenware — cutting boards, spoons, spatulas, bowls, mortars and pestles, and serving pieces.

Beyond the kitchen it is used for knife scales and tool handles, chess pieces, inlay and marquetry, decorative veneer, and small furniture accents and panels. In its Mediterranean homeland it has a long history in religious carvings, rosaries, and souvenir craftwork. It is generally too small, expensive, and unstable to be used for flooring or full-size furniture, though burl and crotch cuts occasionally appear as feature veneers.

Working & Finishing

Olive is dense and hard, so it is more demanding to work than a mild cabinet wood. It turns superbly — one of its great strengths — cutting cleanly and taking crisp detail, but interlocked and irregular grain around figure can tear out under planes and chisels, so sharp, well-honed tools and light cuts are essential. Its hardness and mineral-free but abrasive nature have a moderate dulling effect on edges. Pre-drilling is advisable before nailing or screwing.

Because the wood is naturally oily, gluing can be troublesome; wiping joint faces with a solvent such as acetone before applying glue improves adhesion. It sands and polishes to a high natural luster and finishes well, though the oil content can slow the cure of some film finishes — oil and wax finishes are popular and suit its kitchenware role. The wood is best air-dried slowly and sealed on the ends to limit the checking and splitting it is notorious for.

Caution: olive dust is a known irritant and sensitizer. Fine sanding dust can cause skin, eye, and respiratory irritation and has been associated with dermatitis and asthma-like reactions in some workers, so use dust extraction and a respirator. The wood is not on any CITES appendix and is not an endangered timber.

Value & Availability

Olive is readily available but almost always in small formats — turning squares, bowl blanks, pen blanks, knife-scale pairs, and short craft boards — rather than in dimensional lumber. Larger clear pieces and highly figured burl or crotch stock are scarce and priced accordingly. Per board-foot it is an expensive specialty wood, but because most projects use only small blanks the cost per piece is manageable.

Supply comes mainly from orchard removals and prunings around the Mediterranean and North Africa, which makes it a byproduct-driven material rather than one harvested from managed timber forests. The species is not listed under CITES and is not considered threatened as a species, though individual ancient or heritage olive trees are legally protected in some Mediterranean regions. FSC-certified stock is uncommon given the orchard-salvage nature of the trade.
