Start with the single most diagnostic feature: this is palm, not wood, so everything you expect from a hardwood or softwood is absent. There are no growth rings, no bark line, no medullary rays, and no heartwood/sapwood boundary. Instead the cut face shows a pale cream-to-tan background sprinkled with darker fiber bundles — small reddish-brown to black dots on a true cross-section, and long fibrous streaks or 'string' along the length. The sample's macro cross-section, with distinct fiber bundles standing out against light tan tissue, is textbook palm anatomy.
Read the distribution of the dots. In Trachycarpus fortunei and other palms the vascular bundles are scattered ('atactostele'), not arranged in rings, and they crowd together toward the outer skin of the stem while thinning out toward a soft, pithy center. If you see fiber-dot density change gradually from a hard outer rind to a spongy middle — with no concentric pattern — you are looking at palm stem. Under a lens each dark spot is a bundle of fibers wrapped around conductive tissue, sometimes with a small pale pore at its core.
Use touch and tools as confirmation. The material feels stringy and two-natured: soft, almost spongy tissue between hard, wiry fibers, so a fingernail or blade sinks into the background but catches and drags on the bundles. It is light in weight overall, and a cut edge frays into fibers rather than shearing clean. Freshly cut stem has little distinctive scent — at most a faint vegetal or slightly fermented smell if damp — with no aromatic or resinous odor.
Separating it from look-alikes is mostly a matter of ruling in 'palm' versus ruling out real woods. Other palm timbers — black palm (Borassus), red/coconut palm (Cocos) — share the same dotted, ringless, ray-free structure; they are distinguished by darker, denser fibers and larger trunks, whereas Hemp Palm is paler, softer, and smaller in diameter. Do not confuse the dotted end grain with the pores of a diffuse-porous hardwood: in a hardwood the pores are open vessels in a continuous woody matrix with visible rays, while in palm each 'dot' is a raised, fibrous bundle and there are no rays at all. If a light tan speckled piece has no rings and no rays and frays into fiber, it is a palm, and a small-diameter, pale, soft one points to Hemp Palm.
