Overview
Japanese Cedar (Cryptomeria japonica), known in Japan as sugi, is a large evergreen conifer and the country's national tree. Despite the English name it is not a true cedar; it is the sole species in the genus Cryptomeria, a member of the cypress family (Cupressaceae, formerly grouped with the redwoods). It grows tall and straight, historically forming vast temple groves and today one of Japan's most heavily planted forestry species.
Sugi is the backbone timber of traditional Japanese architecture and joinery, valued for its light weight, straight even grain, pleasant aroma, and the ease with which it works and takes to hand tools. The sample shown displays the wood's characteristic fine grain with clearly marked annual rings and a pale yellowish-tan color typical of the sapwood and lighter heartwood.
Characteristics
Color is one of sugi's most variable traits. The sapwood is a pale creamy yellow to yellowish-tan, as seen on this sample, while the heartwood ranges from light pinkish-brown to a deep reddish-brown, and select decorative grades (jindai buried logs and dark-heart stock) can be nearly chocolate. The contrast between pale sapwood and darker heart can be dramatic. Grain is generally straight with a fine to medium, even texture, a low natural luster, and clearly defined annual rings created by the transition from soft, pale earlywood to denser latewood.
It is a very light, low-density softwood, averaging roughly 21–23 lb/ft³ when dry. The Janka hardness is only about 380 lbf — soft even by softwood standards — so it dents and scratches easily and is not suited to hard-wear surfaces. Heartwood is rated moderately durable to durable and reasonably resistant to decay and insects, aided by aromatic extractives; the pale sapwood, however, is not durable and is prone to attack.
Common Uses
Sugi is the dominant structural and finish softwood of Japanese building: posts, beams, framing, ceilings, wall boards, and the exposed woodwork of houses, temples, and shrines. It is a classic material for shoji and fusuma frames, tokonoma alcove posts, and fine interior joinery where its clean grain is left visible.
Beyond construction it is widely used for panelling, cladding and siding (often charred as shou sugi ban / yakisugi for weather resistance), light furniture, boxes, sake barrels and casks, tubs and buckets (taru and oke), and decorative veneers. Its light weight and aroma also suit chests, drawer interiors, and craft turnery, though its softness limits it in flooring and high-impact applications.
Working & Finishing
Sugi is exceptionally easy to work. It cuts, planes, and saws with little effort using both hand and machine tools and is a favorite for Japanese hand-plane (kanna) work, producing clean surfaces and fine shavings. The main challenge is its pronounced softness and the density difference between earlywood and latewood, which can cause the soft bands to crush or the surface to feel uneven; very sharp tools and light cuts give the best results, and end grain can crumble if tooling is dull.
It glues well and takes finishes readily, though the soft, absorbent earlywood can drink up stain unevenly and blotch, so a sealer or conditioner helps. Nailing and screwing are easy but holding power is modest given the low density. Freshly worked sugi has a pleasant, distinctive aromatic-spicy scent.
Toxicity: sugi is a well-documented respiratory sensitizer. Its pollen is a major cause of seasonal allergy (kafunsho) in Japan, and workers exposed to the wood dust can develop occupational asthma and rhinitis; sanding dust may also irritate skin and eyes. Use dust collection and a respirator. The species is not CITES-listed and carries no endangered-species restrictions.
Value & Availability
In Japan, sugi is abundant, plantation-grown, and among the most affordable domestic timbers, available in everything from rough construction lumber to premium clear and figured finish grades — the latter, and specialty stock like ancient buried jindai sugi, can command high prices. Outside Japan it is much less common; it turns up as specialty imported boards, veneer, and increasingly as pre-charred yakisugi cladding, generally sold at a modest-to-moderate price reflecting import and niche status.
The species is not threatened. It is one of the most extensively planted forestry trees in Japan and is grown for timber elsewhere, so supply is sustainable and FSC-certified material is obtainable. It is not listed on any CITES appendix.
Frequently asked questions
Is Japanese Cedar a real cedar?
No. Despite the common name, *Cryptomeria japonica* is not a true cedar (*Cedrus*) and not closely related to the American aromatic red cedars either. It is its own genus in the cypress family, historically allied with the redwoods. 'Sugi' is the accurate Japanese name and 'Japanese Redwood' is sometimes used.
Why is my sugi board pale yellow when I've seen reddish-brown cedar?
Color depends on the part of the log. The pale creamy-yellow to tan wood is sapwood or light heartwood, while the deep pinkish- to reddish-brown color comes from mature or select heartwood. A single tree yields both, and the contrast between them can be striking. The pale sample shown is sapwood-toned stock.
Is Japanese Cedar hard enough for flooring?
Not really for high-traffic floors. At about 380 lbf Janka it is very soft and dents easily, so it is used mainly for structural framing, wall and ceiling boards, cladding, and light joinery. Where sugi is used underfoot in traditional settings it is accepted that the surface will mark and wear over time.
Is sugi wood or dust harmful?
The finished wood is safe in normal use, but the dust and pollen are notable respiratory sensitizers. Sugi pollen causes widespread seasonal allergy in Japan, and the sawdust can trigger occupational asthma, rhinitis, and skin or eye irritation in sensitive workers. Use dust extraction and a respirator when machining or sanding.
What is yakisugi or shou sugi ban?
It is a traditional Japanese technique of charring the surface of sugi boards to produce weather- and insect-resistant, low-maintenance cladding. The burnt layer protects the wood beneath, and the same aromatic, easily worked sugi timber is the material used for it.
