Overview
Quebracho Colorado is the wood of Schinopsis lorentzii (long also catalogued as Schinopsis quebracho-colorado), a slow-growing tree of the Anacardiaceae family — the same botanical family as cashew, mango, and sumac. It is native to the Gran Chaco, the vast dry forest and thorn-scrub region spanning northern Argentina, Paraguay, and Bolivia, where it is one of the signature timber and tannin trees.
The name says most of what a woodworker needs to know: quebracho is a contraction of the Spanish quiebra-hacha, 'axe-breaker,' a reference to the wood's punishing hardness. At a glance it is an exceptionally heavy, dense timber with a deep maroon-red heartwood sharply set off against a pale golden-orange sapwood — exactly the contrast seen on our sample — and a fine, tight radial grain. Beyond timber, the heartwood is historically one of the world's most important sources of vegetable tannin for leather.
Characteristics
The heartwood is a rich maroon to reddish-brown, often deepening toward a dark oxblood or purplish-red with age and light exposure, while the sapwood is sharply demarcated in pale golden-orange to yellowish tones — a strong, clean contrast that is one of the wood's most recognizable features. On our sample the heartwood reads deep maroon-red against a golden-orange sapwood, with a fine, straight radial grain and a naturally smooth, waxy luster.
Grain is typically straight to slightly interlocked, with a very fine, even texture and few visible pores to the naked eye. This is one of the densest commercial woods in the world, with an air-dry density around 1,200 kg/m³ — well over the density of water, so it sinks readily — and a Janka hardness of roughly 4,570 lbf. That places it in the extremely hard range, harder than lignum vitae by some measures and far above oak, hard maple, or hickory.
Natural durability is excellent. The tannin-rich heartwood is rated very durable, with strong resistance to decay, insects, and even termites, and it holds up in ground contact and exposed conditions where most timbers fail. The pale sapwood is not durable and is usually cut away.
Common Uses
Quebracho Colorado has long been a heavy-duty utility and industrial timber where extreme hardness and rot resistance matter more than easy working. Classic uses include railway sleepers (ties), fence posts, mine timbers, bridge and dock components, heavy construction, and paving blocks — applications that exploit its density and durability in ground contact.
In the shop it is used for tool handles, mallets, turnery, and small dense objects, and its deep maroon color and fine grain suit it to specialty flooring, decorative turning, knife scales, and accent pieces. Historically its single most important role has been non-structural: the heartwood is a premier source of tannin extract for tanning leather, and much of the harvested wood over the last century went to tannin factories rather than sawmills.
Working & Finishing
This is a difficult wood to work by any standard. Its extreme density and hardness cause severe blunting of cutting edges, resist hand tools almost entirely, and demand sharp carbide tooling, slow feed rates, and light cuts on machines. Slightly interlocked grain can tear out, and the wood is prone to checking and to high shrinkage and movement in drying, so it must be seasoned slowly and carefully. It is heavy on saws and hard on everything, but it turns to a crisp, almost glassy surface and takes a high natural polish with little filler.
Gluing can be unreliable because the surface is dense and resinous; pre-boring is essential for any nailing or screwing. It finishes beautifully on its own oils but accepts additional finish acceptably on clean, freshly prepared surfaces.
Safety caution: as a member of the Anacardiaceae (cashew/sumac) family, Quebracho can provoke skin, eye, and respiratory irritation, and sensitized workers may develop dermatitis. The fine dust and high tannin content are recognized irritants, so use effective dust extraction, a respirator, and skin/eye protection. It is not listed on CITES.
Value & Availability
Quebracho Colorado is uncommon in the international lumber trade and is not a mainstream cabinet wood outside South America. Where available it appears mostly as small turning blanks, offcuts, or specialty stock through exotic-wood dealers, and its combination of scarcity, weight, and difficulty of working keeps it toward the higher end for an exotic hardwood; regionally within the Chaco it has historically been an inexpensive, heavily harvested industrial timber.
Sustainability is the real concern. The Chaco quebracho forests were heavily exploited for more than a century for tannin and railway sleepers, and the slow-growing stands have been much reduced; the closely related Schinopsis balansae and Chaco forest habitat more broadly face ongoing pressure from logging and land clearing. The species is not listed on CITES, but responsibly sourced, legally documented, or reclaimed material is strongly preferable given the history of overharvesting and habitat loss.
