Overview
Ipe is the trade name for a group of extremely dense tropical hardwoods from the genus Handroanthus (formerly grouped under Tabebuia), native to Central and South America. Several closely related species are sold interchangeably as Ipe, so the timber is best treated as a species group rather than a single botanical source. The trees are flowering hardwoods — often called trumpet trees — reaching large sizes across the forests of Brazil and neighboring countries.
The wood is famous as one of the hardest, densest, and most durable timbers in commercial use, which is why it dominates the premium exterior decking market. The sample shown is typical: a golden to medium brown heartwood with a rich, well-defined grain pattern, straight to interlocked figure, and a medium texture.
Characteristics
Freshly worked heartwood ranges from a warm golden brown and olive-brown to a darker reddish or blackish brown, frequently with fine lighter and darker striping; exposure and UV tend to weather the surface toward a silvery gray if left unfinished. The sapwood is a narrow band of pale yellowish-white, clearly distinct from the heart. Grain is straight to interlocked, the texture fine-to-medium and fairly even, with a low-to-moderate natural luster. Some pieces show a yellowish powdery deposit (lapachol) lodged in the pores.
Ipe is exceptionally heavy and dense, averaging roughly 69–75 lb/ft³ (about 1,100–1,200 kg/m³) at 12% moisture — dense enough that dry boards typically sink in water. Its Janka hardness of around 3,510 lbf places it far above domestic oaks, maple, and hickory, in the extreme-hard tier. Natural durability is outstanding: heartwood is rated very durable (Class 1) against decay and highly resistant to termites and other insects, which is the basis of its reputation for multi-decade outdoor service.
Common Uses
Ipe's headline use is exterior decking, where its density, hardness, and rot resistance let it last decades with minimal maintenance. From the same qualities it is widely used for boardwalks, docks, piers, exterior siding and cladding, pergolas, outdoor furniture, and heavy-duty flooring in high-traffic commercial settings.
It also serves in structural and industrial roles that demand toughness — railroad ties, truck flooring, and other applications where wear and weather would destroy lesser woods. Indoors it appears as premium flooring and occasionally in furniture and turning, though its weight and hardness make it a demanding material to work.
Working & Finishing
Ipe is difficult to work precisely because of what makes it valuable: extreme density and hardness dull cutting edges quickly and put real strain on tools and machines. Carbide tooling is effectively mandatory, feed rates must be moderated, and pre-drilling is essential before fastening or the wood will split or reject screws. Interlocked grain can tear out during planing, so sharp knives and light cuts help. It is very heavy to handle and hard on saw blades.
Gluing can be troublesome: the natural oils and high density interfere with adhesion, so surfaces should be freshly machined and cleaned, and slow-set or epoxy adhesives are often preferred. It takes a smooth finish but does not readily absorb film finishes; exterior projects are usually left to weather or maintained with penetrating oils.
Caution: Ipe sawdust is a well-documented irritant. Fine dust can cause skin and respiratory irritation, dermatitis, headaches, and asthma-like reactions in sensitized workers, and the wood contains lapachol and related compounds that contribute to this. Use effective dust collection and wear a respirator and eye protection when cutting or sanding.
Value & Availability
Ipe is readily available internationally, most commonly as decking boards and dimensional exterior stock rather than wide cabinet lumber. It sits at the high end of the price range for exterior wood — considerably more expensive than pressure-treated softwood or cedar, and typically pricier than most other decking hardwoods — reflecting its density, durability, and long shipping distances from South America.
Sustainability is the main concern with Ipe. It is not currently listed on any CITES appendix, but the trees grow at low density in the forest, harvesting is tied to tropical deforestation pressure, and illegal or poorly documented logging has been a persistent issue. Some Handroanthus species are of conservation concern. Buyers who want to source responsibly should look for FSC-certified stock and reputable chain-of-custody documentation.
