Red Sandalwood is the wood of Pterocarpus santalinus, a small to medium legume tree endemic to the dry hills of the Eastern Ghats in southern India, chiefly Andhra Pradesh with smaller populations in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. In the timber trade it is more accurately called Red Sanders or red sanderswood, a name that helps distinguish it from the true fragrant sandalwoods (Santalum), to which it is unrelated.
At a glance it is one of the deepest-colored and densest of all commercial timbers: the heartwood is a rich blood-red to dark reddish-brown, the grain is fine and tight, and the wood is so heavy it sinks in water. The sample shown is characteristic — a deep reddish-brown board with a fine, dense grain. Unlike white or yellow sandalwood it is essentially without scent; its value lies in color, density, and its historic role as a source of red dye rather than in aroma. Because of overharvesting and smuggling from its narrow native range, the species is now internationally protected.
Characteristics
The heartwood ranges from a deep blood-red or crimson when freshly worked to a dark purplish reddish-brown as it ages and oxidizes, frequently marked with darker streaks; the narrow sapwood is pale yellowish-white and sharply demarcated. The grain is typically straight but is often wavy or interlocked, and the best material shows a rippled or fiddleback figure (the sought-after "rhapis" or wavy grain) that is highly prized for decorative work. Texture is fine and uniform with a natural waxy luster, matching the fine, dense grain of the sample.
This is an exceptionally dense, hard, and heavy wood — air-dried density commonly runs above 60 lb/ft³ (roughly 1,000-1,100 kg/m³ and often higher), so seasoned pieces sink in water. Its Janka hardness sits very high, on the order of 2,600-3,300 lbf, placing it well above oak, hard maple, and most rosewoods, firmly in the very hard range.
Natural durability is excellent: the heartwood is rated durable to very durable, highly resistant to decay, fungi, and insect and termite attack. The wood is dimensionally stable once seasoned, though the dense stock dries slowly and can check if rushed.
Common Uses
Red Sandalwood has long been valued as much for its pigment as for its timber. The heartwood yields santalin, a natural red dye historically used to color textiles, and it remains an ingredient in traditional cosmetics, Ayurvedic preparations, and coloring agents. As a timber it is used for fine carving, turnery, boxes, decorative inlay, small furniture and cabinet accents, and religious and ceremonial objects.
It has a notable place in musical instruments, particularly in East Asia, where the dense, resonant heartwood is used for parts of Japanese and Chinese string instruments and for shamisen bachi (plectra) and instrument bodies. Its extreme density, deep color, and fine polish also make it a premium material for beads, prayer articles, sculpture, and high-value decorative pieces in China, Japan, and the Middle East, where demand has driven much of the pressure on wild stocks.
Working & Finishing
Red Sandalwood is hard on tools. Its high density and frequently interlocked or wavy grain blunt cutting edges quickly and can tear on quartered faces, so sharp, carbide-tipped tooling and light cuts are advisable. Despite this it turns and carves cleanly and takes an outstandingly fine, near-glassy polish straight off the tool because of its tight texture and natural waxiness. Pre-boring is essential for nails and screws given the hardness, and the dense, waxy surface can benefit from wiping with solvent before gluing to ensure a good bond.
Finishing is easy and rewarding — the wood accepts oils and film finishes well and buffs to a high natural luster — but the santalin pigment can bleed color into adjacent light woods and into finishes, so plan glue-ups and topcoats accordingly.
Caution: the red heartwood dust and pigment stain skin, clothing, and the bench readily. The wood is not noted as strongly toxic, but as with most dense tropical hardwoods the fine dust can irritate the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract, so use dust extraction and a respirator when sanding. Note also that this is not the aromatic sandalwood used in incense and oils; it has little or no scent.
Value & Availability
Genuine Red Sandalwood is scarce, expensive, and legally restricted. Pterocarpus santalinus is listed on CITES Appendix II, and its very limited native range in the Eastern Ghats, combined with heavy illegal logging and smuggling, has made it one of the most tightly controlled and high-value timbers in the world — commanding prices far above ordinary tropical hardwoods and typically traded only in small pieces, blocks, and turning or instrument blanks rather than as general lumber.
On sustainability the picture is serious: the species has been assessed as endangered, its wild populations are depleted, and international trade requires CITES documentation. Legal material generally comes from government-controlled Indian stock or plantation sources, and any purchase should be backed by proper CITES paperwork and proof of legal, documented origin. Buyers should be wary both of unpapered material and of look-alike or mislabeled woods sold under the "red sandalwood" name.
