Overview
Rosewood is the trade name for the wood of several tropical trees in the genus Dalbergia, a group of legumes that yields some of the most prized cabinet and instrument timbers in the world. The Central and South American species — above all Brazilian rosewood (Dalbergia nigra), but also Honduran rosewood, kingwood, and tulipwood — are the classic "true" rosewoods that gave the group its reputation.
These are medium to large trees of tropical forest, and the wood they produce is dense, heavy, oily, and richly colored. The sample shown is characteristic: a rich chocolate to purple-brown heartwood with fine, interlocking grain and a subtle figure. The name is thought to come from the sweet, faintly floral scent the freshly cut wood gives off. Because the finest species have been heavily exploited, rosewood today is as much a story of scarcity and regulation as it is of woodworking.
Characteristics
The heartwood ranges widely across the group but the American rosewoods trend dark: rich chocolate brown, reddish-brown, and purple-brown, very often marked with darker streaking that can approach black. The sample's chocolate-to-purple-brown color with subtle figure is typical. The sapwood is a sharply demarcated pale yellow to cream. Grain is straight to interlocked — the fine, interlocked grain seen here is common — with a medium to fine texture, a natural waxy luster, and an oily feel from the wood's high content of natural resins and oils.
Rosewood is heavy and hard. Density commonly runs around 50-65 lb/ft³ (roughly 800-1,000+ kg/m³) air-dried, and Janka hardness for the American species sits in the very hard range, on the order of 2,200-2,700 lbf, well above domestic oak, maple, or walnut. Natural durability is excellent: the oily heartwood is rated durable to very durable, with good resistance to decay and insect attack, though the dense, resinous nature that protects it also makes it slower to season and prone to checking if dried too fast.
Common Uses
Rosewood has long been a premier wood for the finest work. It is the classic choice for high-end furniture, cabinetry, veneer, and decorative panels, where its dark color, streaking, and luster are wanted as a showpiece. Its density, stability, and tonal qualities also make it a legendary tonewood: rosewood has been used for acoustic guitar backs and sides, piano cases and keys, marimba and xylophone bars, and other instruments, with Brazilian rosewood in particular regarded as a benchmark tonewood.
Beyond furniture and instruments it is favored for turning, carving, boxes, knife and tool handles, chess pieces, billiard cues, and fine inlay and marquetry. The related American Dalbergia woods — cocobolo, kingwood, and tulipwood — occupy the same luxury niche in smaller specialty and turning stock. Because supply is now tightly restricted, much modern use is in thin veneer, small parts, and repair or restoration of older pieces rather than in solid stock.
Working & Finishing
Rosewood works reasonably well for such a dense timber but demands sharp tools and patience. It cuts and turns cleanly and takes a superb polish straight off the tool, but its hardness is hard on edges, interlocked grain can tear on planing, and its weight makes large work slow going. Pre-boring for fasteners is advisable.
The wood's natural oils are a double-edged trait. They give rosewood its silky finished surface and self-lubricating feel in turning, but they also interfere with gluing and with some film finishes: joints and glue lines can fail unless the surface is freshly machined and wiped with a solvent, and oily species may resist certain finishes or take a long time to cure. Many makers use epoxy or wipe with acetone before glue-up, and favor oil or shellac finishes that tolerate the resin.
Caution: rosewoods are well-known sensitizers. The dust and the natural oils can cause skin irritation and allergic dermatitis, and reactions build with repeated exposure; respiratory irritation is also reported. Cocobolo and other Dalbergia are among the more notorious woods for provoking reactions in sensitized workers. Use dust extraction, a respirator, and skin protection, especially when sanding.
Value & Availability
True rosewood is scarce, expensive, and heavily regulated. The finest American species have been logged for centuries and are now among the priciest timbers in the trade, sold mostly as thin veneer, small turning and instrument blanks, and salvaged or pre-restriction stock rather than as freely available lumber. Expect boutique, specialty-supplier pricing well above common exotics, with wide swings by species, figure, and provenance.
Sustainability and legality are central. Brazilian rosewood (Dalbergia nigra) is listed on CITES Appendix I — the strictest tier — and its international trade is essentially banned except for verifiably pre-Convention material with paperwork. Since 2017 the entire genus Dalbergia has been listed on CITES Appendix II, meaning all rosewoods require permits to cross borders, and many species are additionally considered threatened or endangered. Buyers should insist on documented, legally sourced or certified stock, keep any provenance paperwork, and be aware that shipping rosewood — even small hobby pieces or finished instruments — across borders can require CITES permits.
