Black Mangrove is the wood of Avicennia germinans, a salt-tolerant evergreen tree of tropical and subtropical tidal shorelines. It grows on the landward side of coastal mangrove swamps around the warm Atlantic — the Gulf and southern Atlantic coasts of the United States, the Caribbean, and both coasts of Central and South America — as well as along West Africa and into parts of tropical Asia. The tree is named for its dark bark and takes 'black mangrove' from that, distinguishing it from the red and white mangroves it often grows alongside.
At a glance the timber is dense, hard, and heavy, with a pale tan background crossed by darker growth rings, exactly as seen on this sample. The grain is typically straight to somewhat irregular, the texture fine and dense, and the luster low to moderate. Avicennia famously produces successive rings of included phloem, so the darker concentric lines on a cross-section are a hallmark of the genus.
This is a heavy, hard wood. Density runs high — well above most temperate hardwoods — and the Janka hardness is in the neighborhood of 1,900 lbf, placing it firmly in the hard range, comparable to hickory or hard maple. It feels solid and dense in the hand for its size.
Natural durability is moderate to good, and the wood resists decay reasonably well in the wet, saline conditions where it grows, which is why it has long been used locally for pilings, stakes, and posts. Like most timbers, though, its resistance is best in the heartwood, and it is not immune to marine borers or fungal attack over the long term.
