Overview
Ceriops tagal is a small mangrove tree of the family Rhizophoraceae, widespread across the tidal shorelines of the Indo-West Pacific — from East Africa and the Red Sea through India and Southeast Asia to northern Australia and the western Pacific. It is commonly called yellow mangrove or spurred mangrove, and in Southeast Asia the timber is traded as tengar.
The tree is typically a modest shrub or small tree of 3–10 m, so it yields short, small-diameter poles and billets rather than wide boards. The wood itself is heavy, hard, and fine-textured, running tan to light brown as seen on our sample. Historically the species has been valued as much for its tannin-rich bark — long used for tanning leather and dyeing — as for its dense, durable wood.
Characteristics
The wood is tan to light or reddish brown, with heartwood only weakly demarcated from the paler sapwood in the small stems this species produces. The grain is dense and fine, and, as on our sample, cut surfaces often reveal radial ray flecking together with concentric banding — a reflection of the growth-zone and anomalous (included-phloem-type) structure common in mangrove Rhizophoraceae. Luster is low to moderate and the texture is fine and even.
It is a distinctly heavy, dense timber, with an air-dry specific gravity broadly in the 0.9–1.05 range typical of mangrove hardwoods. No standard Janka figure is widely tabulated, but on the strength of that density the wood is very hard — estimated well above 2,000 lbf — and correspondingly strong and stiff for its size.
Natural durability is good: the heartwood resists decay and is moderately resistant to marine borers and termites, which is why mangrove poles have long served in tidal and ground-contact settings. Like most very dense mangrove woods, however, it is prone to checking and splitting as it dries and is best used in the round or in small sections.

Because it grows small, Ceriops tagal is used mostly in the round and in small sections. Traditional and regional uses include house and hut posts, rafters and poles, fishing stakes and fish-trap frames, tool handles, walking sticks, and general small durable joinery.
It is an excellent fuel wood and a prized source of charcoal, burning hot and long thanks to its density. The bark is historically important in its own right — a rich source of tannins ('cutch'/mangrove tan) used for tanning leather, toughening fishing nets and sails, and producing brown dyes.
Working & Finishing
This is a hard, heavy wood, so expect the same handling as other dense tropical timbers: it is demanding on edge tools and blunts them faster than temperate hardwoods, and sharp, well-supported tooling is needed for clean cuts. It turns and finishes to a smooth, hard surface and takes a good polish, but its tendency to check means careful, slow drying and pre-boring for nails or screws are worthwhile. The small, often crooked stems limit what can be milled from it.
Gluing is generally serviceable on clean, freshly machined faces, though the high density and any tannin-rich extractives can interfere with adhesion and may react with iron to cause dark staining in damp conditions; use non-ferrous fasteners where staining matters.
The wood and bark are notably high in tannins. No serious systemic toxicity is specifically associated with Ceriops tagal, but tannin-laden dust can irritate the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract, so standard dust extraction and a respirator are sensible when sawing or sanding.
Value & Availability
Ceriops tagal is not a commercial lumber species in the international timber trade. It is used locally and regionally within its native mangrove range as poles, fuel, charcoal, and tan bark, and it is essentially unavailable through conventional hardwood suppliers; samples and turning billets are a specialty curiosity rather than a stocked product.
The species is not listed under CITES, and on the IUCN Red List Ceriops tagal is assessed as Least Concern. That said, it is a mangrove — a habitat that is legally protected or harvest-restricted in many countries because of its ecological importance for coastal protection, fisheries, and carbon storage. Any use should rely on legally and sustainably sourced material, since much local harvesting is regulated or discouraged to preserve mangrove forests.
