Overview

Crape Myrtle (Lagerstroemia indica) is a small deciduous flowering tree or large multi-stemmed shrub native to East Asia and now one of the most widely planted ornamentals in warm-temperate landscapes. It belongs to the loosestrife family (Lythraceae) and is grown chiefly for its long summer bloom and its smooth, mottled, self-exfoliating bark rather than for timber.

Because the plant rarely develops a large, straight trunk, crape myrtle is almost never available as commercial lumber. What reaches the workbench comes from pruned limbs, removed shrubs, and salvaged trunks — small-diameter, often crooked stock. The wood itself is a pleasant surprise: dense, very hard for its size, and extremely fine-textured. The sample here shows its typical light cream to pale tan color with tightly spaced, uniform growth rings.

Characteristics

The wood is pale throughout, running from light cream to a soft pale tan, with little contrast between sapwood and heartwood — the trunk is often nearly all sapwood-toned given its small size. Freshly worked surfaces have a clean, close texture and a subtle satiny luster. Grain is generally straight to slightly irregular around the many branch junctions, and the growth rings are very fine and tightly spaced, giving an even, uniform appearance without dramatic figure.

Despite coming from a modest shrub-tree, the wood is dense and hard, with a fine, compact cell structure that takes crisp detail. Reliable published Janka figures are scarce because the species is not a commercial timber, but by density and working feel it sits in the hard range, comparable to a firm fruitwood — roughly an estimated 1,200–1,400 lbf. Natural durability is best considered low to moderate; the small-diameter wood is prone to checking and is not recommended for ground contact or exterior use without protection.

Common Uses

Crape myrtle is a specialty and hobbyist wood rather than a production timber. Its dense, fine grain and small billet size make it best suited to woodturning — pens, bottle stoppers, small bowls, spindles, and finials — and to carving, inlay, and small decorative craft items.

Salvaged limbs are popular for rustic and natural-edge work, walking sticks, tool handles, knife scales, and turned or whittled ornaments. Larger recovered trunks occasionally yield small boards for boxes, jewelry pieces, and accents. It is essentially never seen in flooring, structural, or large furniture work simply because the tree does not grow big or straight enough to supply it.

Working & Finishing

Crape myrtle works much like a dense fruitwood. It is hard, so it dulls edges a bit faster than soft domestic hardwoods, but its fine, uniform texture lets it cut and turn cleanly and hold sharp detail. Sharp tooling and light cuts give a glassy surface straight off the tool; the wood sands smooth and finishes very well, taking oil and film finishes to a soft glow.

The practical challenges are size and drying rather than the cutting itself: small-diameter stock, frequent branch knots, and irregular grain around them, plus a tendency to check and crack as it dries — sealing the ends and drying slowly is worthwhile. It glues without trouble. No significant toxicity is documented for Lagerstroemia indica; it is not a known sensitizer, but as with any wood the fine dust can irritate eyes and airways, so ordinary dust collection and a mask are sensible. The species carries no CITES listing or endangered-species restrictions.

Value & Availability

There is no commercial market for crape myrtle lumber, so it is not sold through normal hardwood channels and has no established board-foot price. In practice it is a free or salvage wood — obtained from your own or a neighbor's pruning, tree removals, or the occasional turning-blank swap among hobbyists.

When it does change hands it is as small turning blanks or craft billets at modest prices reflecting scarcity and small size rather than intrinsic value. The plant is extremely common and widely cultivated, so it raises no sustainability concerns; it is not threatened and appears on no CITES appendix. FSC-certified stock is not a meaningful concept here since the wood is effectively an ornamental-pruning byproduct.
