Overview
Fig is the wood of Ficus carica, the common or edible fig — a small, spreading, deciduous tree of the mulberry family (Moraceae) long cultivated around the Mediterranean basin and western Asia for its fruit rather than its timber. Trees are typically low, gnarled, and multi-stemmed, so usable clear stock is short and small in section.
At a glance the wood is pale — cream to a light tan — with soft, open, diffuse-porous grain and visible growth rings. It is light in weight and low in density, closer in feel to a soft utility hardwood than to a dense fruitwood. Because the tree is grown as an orchard crop, fig wood reaches the workshop mostly as prunings, stumps, or salvaged wood rather than as commercial boards.
Characteristics
Sapwood and heartwood are only weakly differentiated, so most fig stock reads uniformly pale — cream to light tan, as seen on this sample. In cross-section the wood shows concentric growth rings with clearly visible vessel pores, giving it a somewhat coarse, open texture for such a pale wood. The grain is generally straight but can be irregular around the tree's many knots and forks, and the natural luster is low. Figure is usually plain, though burl, crotch, and stump wood can produce swirling, knotty patterns prized by turners.
Fig is soft and light, with an estimated Janka hardness in the region of 400-500 lbf — placing it toward the soft end of the hardwood range, well below oak, maple, or true fruitwoods like cherry and pear. It is correspondingly low in strength and stiffness.
Natural durability is poor. Like most pale, low-density orchard woods the heartwood is non-durable and offers little resistance to decay, insects, or fungal staining, and freshly cut wood is prone to spalting and mold if not dried promptly. Fig is a wood for dry, interior use only.
Common Uses
Fig is not a commercial timber and has no established role in flooring, structural work, or production furniture. Its value is in small-scale and hobby work, where salvaged orchard wood is put to use: turning bowls, spindles, and small vessels; carving; treen and small woodenware; boxes; and decorative or rustic pieces that make a feature of its knots, burl, and pale color.
Because pieces are small and often irregular, fig suits craft turnery, spoons and utensils, inlay and accent stock, and other short-grain applications. Historically fig and other soft, pale Mediterranean woods have also been used locally for light utility items and for fuel and charcoal. It is not a wood chosen for load-bearing joinery or outdoor use.
Working & Finishing
Fig is easy to work with both hand and machine tools thanks to its softness and low density, cutting and carving with little effort. That same softness is the main drawback: its open, sometimes woolly grain tends to crush, dent, and tear rather than shear cleanly, so keen, well-honed edges and light finishing cuts are needed for a crisp surface. It turns acceptably when sound but can be fibrous around knots and reaction wood. The wood is dimensionally moving and should be dried slowly and carefully, as thin or irregular orchard stock is prone to checking and warping.
It glues well and accepts nails and screws easily, though its softness means fixings hold weakly and pre-boring near ends is wise. Being pale and somewhat porous it can finish blotchy; a sanding sealer or wash coat helps before staining, and it takes clear oils and film finishes reasonably once sealed.
Fig is not classed as a toxic timber, but the fresh tree exudes an irritant milky latex, and both the sap and sawdust can provoke skin irritation, allergic dermatitis, and respiratory irritation in sensitive workers — the Ficus latex is a known contact allergen and, on skin, a photosensitizer. Fig is not CITES-listed or otherwise trade-restricted. Use dust extraction and a mask, and handle green wood with care.
Value & Availability
Fig has essentially no formal lumber market. It is not stocked by timber merchants and does not appear in commercial price lists; it reaches woodworkers almost entirely as orchard prunings, removed trees, stump and burl salvage, or occasional craft-supplier turning blanks. What little changes hands is priced as a novelty or hobby material rather than by any standard board rate, so cost is highly variable and depends on local availability more than on the wood itself.
The common fig is a widely cultivated, fast-growing, non-threatened species. It carries no CITES listing and no endangered status, and FSC-style certification is not relevant to a wood that is a byproduct of fruit growing. As salvaged orchard material it is an inherently sustainable, low-impact choice for small projects — the main limits are the size and quality of the pieces, not conservation concerns.
