Overview
Jack Wood (Shorea robusta) is a dense, structurally strong hardwood cut from a large tree in the family Dipterocarpaceae, native to the Sal-forest belt of the Indian subcontinent and mainland Southeast Asia. It is far better known in its home range as Sal, and is one of the most important timber trees across that region.
At a glance our sample presents as a warm tan to light brown timber with a visible, fairly straight-to-interlocked grain and medium figure. It is a heavy, hard, coarse-textured wood that runs to a tough, resinous board — the reason it has long been a first-choice timber for structural framing, sleepers and heavy joinery where strength and durability count more than fine cabinet appearance.
Characteristics
The freshly worked wood shown on our sample is a warm tan to light brown; in service the heartwood commonly deepens toward a darker reddish- or golden-brown as it oxidizes, while the paler sapwood is only moderately distinct. The grain is straight to somewhat interlocked, producing a subtle, broken ribbon on quartersawn faces, and the texture is medium to coarse with a low-to-moderate natural luster. The wood is noticeably resinous, and a coarse, open pore pattern is easily seen on the end grain.
Jack Wood is a heavy, dense timber, roughly 800–880 kg/m³ air-dry, with a Janka hardness in the region of 1,400 lbf — squarely in the hard range, comparable to white oak and well above temperate cherry or walnut. It is correspondingly stiff and strong, with high crushing and bending strength for its class.
The heartwood is rated durable to very durable, with good resistance to decay and reasonable resistance to termites, which supports its heavy outdoor and ground-contact use. It can be refractory to season, tending to check and distort if dried too quickly, and its resin content and density make it slow to air-dry.
Common Uses
Jack Wood is above all a structural and heavy-duty timber. Traditional and continuing uses include house framing, beams, posts, rafters, door and window frames, railway sleepers, bridge and wharf timbers, piling, and heavy construction where strength and durability are the priority.
Beyond structure it is used for heavy-duty flooring, agricultural implements, cart and wagon parts, mine timbers, and general joinery. Cleaner stock is worked into sturdy furniture and cabinetry, though its weight, coarse texture and resin make it less of a fine-furniture wood than a robust utility hardwood.
Working & Finishing
Jack Wood is a demanding wood to machine. Its density, coarse texture and interlocked grain blunt cutting edges fairly quickly and can cause tear-out on quartersawn faces, so sharp, carbide-tipped tooling, reduced cutting angles and steady feed rates help. The wood is hard on saws and planers, and pre-boring is advisable for nailing and screwing to avoid splitting.
Gluing can be complicated by the resin content and dense surface, so freshly machined, clean faces and suitable adhesives give the most reliable bond. It sands and finishes to a serviceable rather than a high-gloss surface; the coarse pores may need filling for a smooth finish, and resin can occasionally interfere with some coatings. Careful, slow seasoning is important because the wood is prone to checking and distortion.
Cautions: Shorea dust is a mechanical and respiratory irritant like most dense tropical hardwoods, and fine dust can provoke coughing or skin and eye irritation in sensitive workers, so use dust extraction and a respirator. It has no widely reported severe toxicity, but standard fine-dust precautions apply.
Value & Availability
Jack Wood / Sal is abundant and economically important within its native range, where it is one of the mainstay construction timbers, so it is readily available and modestly priced locally as structural lumber, beams and sleepers. Outside South and Southeast Asia it is uncommon in general lumberyards and is more of a specialty import, which raises its relative cost and limits selection.
Shorea robusta is not listed under CITES, and the species itself is not considered globally threatened, though it is harvested heavily and much of its forest habitat is under pressure. Because it is a keystone forest species, responsibly sourced or FSC-certified material is preferable where available. Note that many other Shorea species are traded internationally under bulk names such as meranti, lauan and seraya, so buyers wanting true Sal should confirm the species and provenance.
