Overview

Kingwood is a true rosewood, cut from Dalbergia cearensis, a small tree native to the dry forests of northeastern Brazil. It is one of the densest and most prized members of the Dalbergia genus, valued since the era of French royal cabinetmaking — the name is often said to trace to its use in furniture for European kings, and its French names bois violet and bois de violette nod to its violet cast.

At a glance it is a hard, heavy, oily wood in medium to dark brown, frequently carrying a purple or violet undertone and marked by darker streaks. The tree is small and often irregular, so kingwood comes to market in narrow boards, billets, and turning blanks rather than wide lumber — a wood used in small quantities where its color and figure count.

Characteristics

The heartwood ranges from medium reddish- or violet-brown to a darker chocolate brown, crossed by fine darker streaks that give worked surfaces a striped, sometimes almost banded look. The sample here shows that medium-to-dark brown ground with darker streaking and a radial, wavy figure over visible growth rings — typical of the species. The pale yellow to whitish sapwood is sharply demarcated from the heartwood. Freshly cut, the violet tones are strongest; with light exposure the color mellows toward a warmer brown over time. Grain is straight to somewhat interlocked or wavy, with a fine, even texture and a naturally high, oily luster.

The wood is very dense and heavy, sinking in water when green, with a Janka hardness of roughly 3,340 lbf — squarely in the very hard range, harder than most domestic hardwoods and comparable to other true rosewoods.

Natural durability is high: kingwood is rated durable to very durable regarding decay and generally resists insect attack, though as a small-dimension decorative wood it is rarely relied upon for exterior or structural service.

Common Uses

Kingwood is a decorative specialty wood. Historically it was a marquetry, inlay, banding, and veneer wood in fine French and English furniture, and that remains its classic role — small accents, borders, and parquetry where a rich violet-brown stripe is wanted.

Today it is most often seen in turning and small luxury goods: pens, knife and razor handles, chess pieces, jewelry and keepsake boxes, brush backs, pool-cue points and inlays, and other fine turned or carved items. It also appears in musical-instrument detailing. Because the tree yields only small, narrow stock, kingwood is almost never used for flooring, large panels, or structural work — it is a wood for accents and small showpieces.

Working & Finishing

Kingwood is hard, dense, and abrasive on cutting edges, so sharp, well-supported carbide tooling and light cuts give the best results; interlocked or wavy grain can tear out, and the wood can burn if pushed. It turns exceptionally well, taking crisp detail and polishing to a natural glassy shine straight off the tool — one reason turners favor it.

Because it is oily, gluing can be troublesome: wipe joint faces with acetone or another solvent before bonding, and consider epoxy for reliable adhesion. The same oils and density can slow the curing of some finishes, so let surfaces de-grease before finishing; it often looks best with a thin film finish, oil, or simply buffed. Pre-drill for screws and nails given the hardness.

Kingwood is expensive and available only in small sizes. Expect to find it as turning blanks, pen blanks, small billets, thin boards, and veneer rather than wide lumber; wide, clear stock is essentially unavailable because of the tree's small stature, and prices sit at the high end for exotic woods, rising with billet size and figure.

As a Dalbergia species, kingwood is covered by CITES: since 2017 the entire genus Dalbergia is listed on CITES Appendix II, so international trade is regulated and requires permits, and buyers should expect documentation for imported stock. It is best purchased from reputable suppliers who can confirm legal, permitted sourcing; FSC-certified material is scarce for this specialty wood, so responsible provenance and paperwork matter more than certification labels here.
