Overview
Mangrove Apple is the wood of Sonneratia alba, a small to medium evergreen tree of the mangrove genus Sonneratia (family Lythraceae). It grows on the seaward edge and estuarine mudflats of tropical Indo-Pacific coasts, ranging from East Africa and the Indian Ocean shores through Southeast Asia — Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam — into the western Pacific and northern Australia. The tree is best known ecologically for its salt-tolerant roots and the peg-like pneumatophores that push up through the mud, and for its round, apple-like fruit that gives it its common name.
At a glance the timber is pale — a light tan to pinkish or greyish tan — with a very fine, dense, even structure, exactly as seen on our sample. It is a hard, heavy wood for its modest tree size, but Sonneratia is primarily a coastal-protection and subsistence species rather than a plantation timber, so the wood is a local-use material and is not a standard item of the international hardwood trade.
Characteristics
Heartwood and sapwood are not strongly contrasted: the wood runs pale, from light tan to a pinkish or greyish tan, sometimes deepening a little on exposure, with the sapwood only slightly lighter. The grain is typically straight to shallowly interlocked, and the texture is fine, dense, and even, as observed on this sample, with a low to moderate natural luster and no pronounced figure. The end grain is diffuse-porous with small, fairly evenly distributed pores.
It is a dense, fairly hard wood — heavier than its small stature suggests — with a Janka hardness estimated in the medium-hard range, roughly 1,000-1,200 lbf, comparable to temperate hardwoods such as oak. Exact published mechanical figures are scarce because the species is little studied as a commercial timber.
Natural durability is only moderate, and this is the wood's key limitation: like most mangrove timbers it is prone to fungal decay and, in and around seawater, to marine-borer attack, and it is not durable in exposed ground or immersion without treatment. It also tends to move and can be difficult to season without checking, so it is generally used green or for short-service applications rather than fine, stable joinery.
Common Uses
Sonneratia alba is used mainly at the local and subsistence level rather than in industrial manufacture. Common applications include general light construction, poles, posts, and boat parts, rough furniture, tool handles, and household implements in coastal communities. Because it is dense and burns well, a great deal of the wood is used as firewood and converted to charcoal.
Where sound stock is available it can be sawn for boards used in flooring, paneling, and light structural work, and it turns adequately for small utilitarian items. The tree also has non-timber value that often outweighs its use as lumber: the sour fruit is eaten and made into preserves, the pneumatophores have local uses, and standing trees are valued for shoreline stabilization and as fish and wildlife habitat.
Working & Finishing
Being fine-textured and dense, Mangrove Apple works to a smooth, clean surface with sharp tools, and it turns and finishes well for small pieces. Its density gives it a moderate blunting effect on cutting edges, and any interlocked grain can tear out in planing, so keen tooling and light cuts help. It takes a good polish and accepts finishes reasonably once the surface is prepared.
The main working difficulties are in drying and stability: the wood is inclined to check, distort, and move during seasoning, so slow, careful drying is important, and it holds fasteners better with pre-boring given its hardness. Gluing is generally satisfactory on clean, freshly machined faces.
On safety, there are no widely documented severe toxicity or sensitization hazards specific to Sonneratia alba, but as with any dense tropical hardwood the fine dust can irritate the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract, so use dust extraction and a respirator when sawing and sanding. The species is not listed on CITES.

It is harvested and used locally within its coastal range, and you will not find it stocked as dimensioned lumber through the international specialty-hardwood trade; there is no meaningful market price, and availability outside its native region is effectively nil.
