Overview
Okoumé is the wood of Aucoumea klaineana, a large tropical hardwood in the family Burseraceae, native to a fairly narrow band of Central Africa centered on Gabon and extending into Equatorial Guinea and the Republic of the Congo. It is a tall, straight-boled emergent forest tree that regenerates well in disturbed ground, and it is the single most important commercial timber of Gabon — long the backbone of that country's plywood industry.
At a glance the timber is light in weight, soft, and fine-textured, with a warm golden-tan to honey-yellow color and a straight, uniform grain — exactly as seen on this sample. Its low density, easy rotary-peeling, and pleasant even color made it the world's default face and core veneer for plywood, and it remains best known in the trade as Gaboon or 'Gaboon plywood.' It is emphatically a utility and panel wood chosen for lightness and workability rather than for hardness or durability.
Characteristics
Heartwood is a warm salmon-pink to golden-tan or light reddish-brown, often deepening slightly on exposure, while the sapwood is paler — greyish to pale pink — and only moderately distinct from the heartwood. On this sample the color reads golden-tan to honey yellow, with a fine, straight, uniform grain. The grain is typically straight but can be shallowly interlocked, which produces a soft ribbon or stripe figure on quartered faces; texture is medium and even, with a low to moderate luster.
Okoumé is a low-density wood, with a Janka hardness around 380 lbf — soft, comparable to many softwoods and well below temperate hardwoods like oak, maple, or true mahogany. It is light in weight and low in strength and stiffness, dents and scratches easily, and is valued for how readily it peels and machines rather than for toughness. A common working nuisance is silica in the wood, which dulls tooling faster than the low density alone would suggest.
Natural durability is poor. The heartwood is rated non-durable to perishable, with little resistance to decay, and it is susceptible to insect and fungal attack, including staining fungi and borers in freshly felled logs. It is an interior or protected-use wood unless the plywood is bonded with a durable adhesive and sealed — which is exactly how it earns its marine-plywood reputation.
Common Uses
Okoumé's defining use is plywood: it peels cleanly into wide, uniform rotary veneer, and its light weight and even color make it the standard face and core stock for general-purpose and marine plywood, where 'Gaboon' or okoumé-core marine ply is a boatbuilding staple. The same qualities suit it to blockboard, laminated panels, and decorative veneer.
Beyond panels it is used for lightweight joinery, interior trim and paneling, furniture parts and drawer components, boxes and crates, and as a stable, lightweight substrate under better veneers. In boatbuilding it is prized for hulls, decks, and bulkheads built from stitch-and-glue and cold-molded okoumé plywood, where saving weight matters. It turns and works easily for light, non-structural pieces, though its softness limits it for anything that must take wear or hold crisp detail.
Working & Finishing
Okoumé is very easy to work with both hand and machine tools thanks to its low density, and it peels, saws, and planes readily. Its two main working cautions are the interlocked grain, which can tear out on quartered surfaces during planing and moulding, and silica in the wood, which blunts cutting edges faster than expected — carbide tooling and sharp, keenly honed edges help on both counts. Being soft, it bruises and dents easily and does not hold fine detail as well as a dense wood, and its somewhat woolly texture can leave a fuzzy surface that needs careful sanding.
It glues very well — essential for its role as a plywood and stitch-and-glue boat wood — and nails and screws without much splitting, though its softness means fasteners can pull out under load. It dries fairly quickly and easily. Because it is soft and absorbent, it benefits from a sanding sealer or grain filler before finishing; it then stains and finishes acceptably, and in boat use it is almost always sealed under epoxy and paint or varnish rather than left bare.
On safety, okoumé is generally low in reported toxicity, but like most wood dust its fine dust can cause skin, eye, and respiratory irritation, and it has been reported to cause irritation or occasional sensitization in some workers. Use effective dust extraction and a respirator when machining or sanding. The species is not listed on CITES.
Value & Availability
Okoumé is widely available, though far more often as plywood and veneer than as solid lumber — 'Gaboon' or okoumé marine plywood is a familiar catalog item at boatbuilding and specialty panel suppliers. Solid boards are less common outside its region. As a panel and utility wood it is moderately priced: okoumé marine ply sits at the affordable end of the marine-plywood market relative to premium species, while its lightness keeps it in steady demand.
The species is not listed under CITES and faces no trade restrictions, but it has been assessed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List owing to heavy exploitation across its limited range. Because so much of the supply flows through Gabon's plywood industry, FSC-certified okoumé is relatively well established, and responsibly sourced or certified stock is the preferable choice where available.
