Overview

Xylia is the timber of Xylia xylocarpa (long known by the synonym Xylia dolabriformis), a medium to large leguminous hardwood tree of the monsoon and deciduous forests of mainland Southeast Asia — Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam — extending into parts of India. It is far better known in the trade by its Burmese name, pyinkado, and by the blanket label 'ironwood' that its weight and durability have earned it across the region.

At a glance this is a heavy, hard, tough wood chosen for structural endurance rather than looks. Freshly worked stock reads light tan to pinkish-brown — the tone seen on this sample — and it deepens on exposure toward a warm reddish- to dark-brown heartwood. The grain runs from fine to moderate and is frequently interlocked, giving a subtle stripe or ribbon figure on quartered faces. Its combination of density, natural decay resistance, and resistance to termites and borers has made it one of the mainstay heavy-construction timbers of Burma and Thailand for over a century.

Characteristics

The heartwood ranges from light tan and pinkish-brown when fresh to a warm reddish-brown or dark chocolate brown as it ages and oxidizes; the sapwood is paler, a lighter tan to yellowish band that is reasonably well demarcated from the heart. Grain is fine to moderate in texture and is commonly interlocked, so quartered surfaces show a soft ribbon or stripe figure and a low to moderate luster. The distinct figure noted on this sample is typical of the interlocked stock.

This is a genuinely dense, hard wood, with a Janka hardness in the region of ~1,700 lbf — hard, well up in ironwood territory and comparable to woods like hickory or dense oak, though figures vary with source and growth. It is heavy, strong, stiff, and shock-resistant, with high crushing and bending strength that suit it to load-bearing use.

Natural durability is excellent. The heartwood is rated very durable, with strong resistance to fungal decay and, notably, good resistance to termites and to marine borers — one of the reasons it is favored for ground-contact, water-contact, and structural applications. The sapwood is not durable and is liable to insect attack. Like many dense tropical hardwoods it can be refractory to season, tending to check or distort if dried too fast.

Common Uses

Xylia's traditional home is heavy construction. It is a classic railway-sleeper (crosstie) wood, and it is used for bridge timbers, wharves, piling, mine timbers, house posts and framing, beams, and other structural members where strength and rot resistance matter more than appearance. Its resistance to marine borers extends its use to some waterfront and dockwork.

Because it is so hard and wear-resistant, it also serves for heavy-duty flooring, industrial and factory flooring, decking, agricultural implements, tool handles, cart and vehicle parts, and general utility joinery. It takes a good enough surface for durable furniture and cabinetry where a heavy, hard-wearing wood is wanted, and it turns adequately for sturdy utilitarian pieces. It is used regionally for boat framing and other marine components as well.

Working & Finishing

Xylia is hard work to machine, as its density and frequently interlocked grain would suggest. It is moderately difficult to saw and plane, has a marked blunting effect on cutting edges, and the interlocked grain is prone to tearing out on planed and moulded surfaces — a reduced cutting angle and sharp, well-maintained tooling give the cleanest results. Pre-boring is necessary for nailing and screwing because the wood is dense and splits under fasteners. Hand-tool work is heavy going.

It can be brought to a smooth, hard-wearing finish, but its density and any oily or gummy content can slow glue curing and interfere with adhesion, so surfaces should be freshly prepared and appropriate adhesives chosen; it takes stains and finishes reasonably once sealed. Careful, slow seasoning is important to limit checking and distortion.

On safety, Xylia xylocarpa is not among the most notorious sensitizers, but as with most dense tropical hardwoods the fine dust can cause respiratory and skin/eye irritation in some workers, so effective dust extraction, a respirator, and eye protection are sensible. The species is not listed on CITES and carries no international trade restriction.

Value & Availability

Xylia is a regional utility and structural timber rather than a widely exported cabinet wood, so availability outside Southeast Asia is limited and somewhat specialized; within its native range it is common and relatively economical, traded in quantity as pyinkado for sleepers, poles, and construction. Where it does reach export and specialty markets it is priced as a heavy, durable structural hardwood rather than a premium decorative species.

The species is not CITES-listed and is not globally assessed as threatened, but it has been heavily exploited for structural timber across parts of its range, and legality of supply from Myanmar in particular is a real concern given restrictions on Burmese timber exports. Responsibly and legally sourced or FSC-certified stock is the preferable choice where it can be found; buyers should be mindful of provenance and of applicable import rules on Burmese teak-and-hardwood trade.
