Overview
Bruguiera cylindrica is one of the mangrove trees of the family Rhizophoraceae, a small-to-medium tree of the intertidal forests fringing the coasts, estuaries, and tidal creeks of Southeast Asia and the wider Indo-Malayan region — from Malaysia and Indonesia through Thailand, the Philippines, and neighboring shores. It grows on the landward and mid-zone mudflats, anchored by looping knee roots, and in the trade its timber is lumped together with other mangroves under Malay names such as bakau and berus.

This is a dense, heavy wood. Mangrove timbers of this group commonly run to a specific gravity around 0.8–0.9, and the Janka hardness is high — on the order of ~1,900 lbf, placing it solidly in the hard range alongside dense tropical utility woods. It is correspondingly strong and stiff but also prone to end-checking and appreciable movement as it dries.
Natural durability is moderate and situational. In its native use — poles and charcoal — the wood performs well, but like other mangroves it is not reliably resistant when exposed to marine borers in permanent saltwater immersion, and untreated stock is vulnerable to decay and insect attack in variable, damp conditions. Its bark is high in tannins, historically used for tanning and dyeing.

The straight, dense stems also serve for handles, small turnery, and general farm and fishing implements. The tannin-rich bark has traditionally been used for tanning leather and dyeing nets and cordage. Because the tree yields only small-diameter, often short and slightly crooked logs, it rarely enters the sawn-lumber or furniture trade as a named species; where it does, it is generally sold anonymously within mixed mangrove (bakau) parcels.

It cuts and turns to a clean, fine surface but blunts edges fairly quickly, so sharp, well-supported tooling is worthwhile; any interlocked grain can tear on planing, and the wood's tendency to check and move means careful, slow seasoning is important to avoid splitting. Pre-boring for nails and screws is sensible given the density.
It sands to a smooth finish and takes oils and finishes reasonably, though the tannin content can bleed, react with iron and damp to leave dark stains, and interfere with some water-based coatings — clean, dry, freshly machined surfaces glue and finish best.
