Overview

Chir Pine is the wood of Pinus roxburghii, a large, long-needled pine that dominates the lower and middle slopes of the Himalaya, typically between about 500 and 2,000 metres, from Pakistan and northern India through Nepal into Bhutan. It is one of the most abundant and commercially important conifers of the region, cut both for timber and, historically, tapped heavily for its resin (the source of Indian turpentine and rosin).

The tree is tall and straight with a broad crown of long, drooping needles borne in bundles of three. As a timber it is a typical resinous softwood: moderately light, moderately soft, with pronounced growth rings and a warm brown to reddish-brown heartwood. On our sample the cut cross-sections show clearly visible growth-ring grain and a brown to reddish-brown color. At a glance it reads as a knotty, aromatic building pine rather than a fine cabinet wood, and that is where most of it goes — construction, packing, and general utility joinery.

Characteristics

The heartwood is brown to reddish-brown, often with a warm pinkish or orange cast, and darkens somewhat with age and resin content; the sapwood is distinctly paler — whitish to pale yellow-brown — and can be broad in fast-grown trees. Growth rings are prominent because the dense, darker latewood contrasts against the softer earlywood, giving the conspicuous ringed grain seen on our sample. Grain is generally straight, texture is medium to coarse and somewhat uneven, and luster is low to moderate. The wood is typically resinous, with visible resin canals and a strong pine odor.

It is a moderately light, moderately soft softwood, with a Janka hardness in the region of 680 lbf — soft to medium-soft, comparable to many other utility pines and well below temperate hardwoods such as oak or maple. Density is moderate but variable, depending strongly on ring width and resin content.

Natural durability is low. The heartwood is rated non-durable to moderately durable and is susceptible to fungal decay, blue-stain, and insect and borer attack, particularly in the sapwood; it is not suited to ground contact or exterior exposure untreated. Fortunately the wood is permeable and takes preservative treatment readily, which is how it is commonly used for more demanding service.

Common Uses

Chir Pine is above all a general-purpose construction and utility timber. It is widely used for light structural work, rafters, beams, planking, formwork and scaffolding, door and window frames, and inexpensive joinery and interior fittings throughout its native range. Its long, clear, straight boles also make it a staple for packing cases, crates, pallets, and boxes.

Beyond construction it is used for railway sleepers and poles (after preservative treatment), for plywood and match splints, and as a raw material for pulp and paper. The resin tapped from the living tree is economically important in its own right, yielding turpentine and rosin. As a plentiful, easily worked pine it also sees plenty of use in low-cost furniture, shelving, and general carpentry, though its knottiness and resin make it a utility choice rather than a premium furniture wood.

Working & Finishing

Chir Pine works easily with both hand and machine tools, much like other soft, resinous pines. The main nuisances are knots and resin: the wood is often knotty, and resin can gum up saw blades and cutters and bleed at the surface, so keeping tooling sharp and clean helps. Softer earlywood between the harder latewood bands can lead to a slightly woolly or uneven surface, so sharp cutters and careful sanding give the cleanest finish. It nails, screws, and glues well, though resin pockets can interfere locally with adhesion and finishing.

Because of its resin content, the wood benefits from a sealer or knotting solution before painting to stop resin bleed and staining; it stains somewhat unevenly owing to the earlywood/latewood contrast, so a conditioner helps. It seasons fairly readily but, like many pines, can be prone to distortion, splitting, and blue-stain if not dried and stored with care.

On safety, pine woods including Chir Pine are not considered toxic, but the fine dust and, especially, the resin/terpenes can cause skin and respiratory irritation and, in some people, allergic contact dermatitis or sensitization. Use dust extraction and normal respiratory protection when sanding, and avoid prolonged skin contact with fresh resin. The species is not CITES-listed.

Value & Availability

Chir Pine is abundant and inexpensive within its native region, where it is one of the most commonly available construction softwoods; it is sold as sawn structural timber, planking, and packing-case stock rather than as a specialty cabinet wood. Outside South Asia it is rarely traded internationally, so availability elsewhere is limited and it is seldom seen in Western lumberyards.

The species is not listed on CITES and is not considered threatened — it is a widespread, fast-colonizing pine, so much so that it is often regarded as an aggressive pioneer on degraded Himalayan slopes. As with any softwood, responsibly and legally sourced or FSC-certified stock is preferable where available, but supply pressure on the species itself is not a concern; the greater environmental questions around it relate to forest management and fire in its native range rather than to scarcity of the wood.
