Overview
Iroko is the wood of Milicia excelsa (formerly Chlorophora excelsa), a large tree of the mulberry family (Moraceae) native to tropical West and Central Africa. It is one of the continent's most important commercial timbers and is widely marketed as "African teak" — a nickname earned by its durability and golden color rather than any botanical relationship to true teak (Tectona).
The tree is a tall rainforest emergent that can exceed 100 ft with a long, clean, buttressed bole, yielding wide, straight boards well suited to joinery and construction. At a glance Iroko is a medium-density, moderately hard hardwood with a warm golden-honey to yellow-brown heartwood that darkens to a richer brown on exposure. The sample here is characteristic: a golden-honey brown with medium, mostly straight grain and subtle striping and tonal variation.
Characteristics
Freshly cut heartwood is a yellow to golden-honey brown that deepens and mellows to a medium or darker brown as it oxidizes with light and age; the sapwood is a clearly demarcated pale yellow to cream band. The grain is typically interlocked — though the sample shown reads as medium and largely straight with a subtle stripe — giving a moderately coarse but even texture, low to moderate natural luster, and a soft ribbon figure on quartered faces. Occasional darker streaks and pale mineral (calcium carbonate) deposits, known as "stone" or "kambala stone," can occur in the grain.
It is a medium-density hardwood, averaging roughly 40 lb/ft³ (about 640 kg/m³) at 12% moisture, with a Janka hardness near 1,260 lbf that places it in the medium-hard range. Its standout property is durability: the heartwood is rated very durable, with excellent resistance to decay, fungi and most insects (though not immune to marine borers), which is the main reason it is used interchangeably with teak for demanding exterior work. It is also dimensionally stable in service once seasoned.
Common Uses
Iroko's durability and stability make it a mainstay of exterior and marine joinery: it is widely used for boatbuilding, docks, garden furniture, decking, gates, cladding, window frames, sills and exterior doors, often as a lower-cost stand-in for teak. Its resistance to moisture also makes it popular for kitchen worktops, draining boards and laboratory bench tops.
Indoors it serves for furniture, cabinetry, flooring, staircases, paneling and general and structural joinery, and it is sliced into decorative veneer. The wood turns and carves reasonably well and is also used for utensils, sculpture and — thanks to its stability — for pattern-making and framing. In parts of Africa it is a traditional carving and construction timber.
Working & Finishing
Iroko is moderately easy to work but has a few quirks. The interlocked grain tends to tear out when planing or molding quartered surfaces, so sharp, high-cutting-angle tooling and light passes help; overall it machines, glues, screws and nails soundly and takes a good finish, sanding to a smooth surface that polishes and oils well. The biggest tooling hazard is the occasional deposits of hard calcium-carbonate "stone" hidden in the grain, which can badly blunt or even chip cutting edges — inspect boards and expect to touch up tools.
On safety, Iroko warrants real caution. The dust is a recognized respiratory sensitizer and irritant and is a well-documented cause of occupational asthma, as well as skin and eye irritation and, in some workers, dermatitis and other reactions. Effective dust extraction and a good respirator are strongly advised when machining or sanding, along with skin and eye protection. Finished, sealed lumber in service is not considered hazardous.
Value & Availability
Iroko is one of the more readily available African hardwoods, commonly stocked as lumber and veneer in good widths and lengths, and it sits in the moderate price tier — generally well below genuine teak, which is a major reason it is chosen as a teak alternative for outdoor and marine work. Prices reflect its status as a mainstream commercial timber rather than a rare exotic.
On sustainability, Milicia excelsa is not listed on any CITES appendix, so it trades without CITES permits. However, the IUCN has assessed it as Near Threatened due to logging pressure, slow regeneration and habitat loss across its range, and stocks in some West African countries are depleted. FSC-certified and responsibly sourced Iroko is available and is the preferable choice for buyers who want documented legal and sustainable origin.
