Rhododendron is the wood of shrubs and small trees in the genus Rhododendron, here represented by Rhododendron molle, a deciduous azalea native to the temperate hills and mountain slopes of China and adjacent parts of East Asia. The gnarled root and burl wood is valued by carvers and turners for its swirl figure. It is not a construction or flooring timber, simply because usable board sizes are not available.
Working & Finishing
Rhododendron works much like other dense, fine-grained hardwoods. It cuts and turns cleanly and takes fine detail well, but its hardness is demanding on edges and it can be tricky where the grain is wavy or knotty — sharp tools, light cuts, and a high spindle speed give the best surface, and reversing or irregular grain around forks and burls tends to tear if tooling is dull. It sands to a very smooth finish, glues well, and takes stains, oils, and film finishes readily, buffing up to a satiny sheen.
Be aware that many rhododendrons dry with movement, checking, and case-hardening in the small, pith-centered sections typical of the plant; sealing the ends and drying slowly reduces splitting. Turning green and rough-shaping before final drying is a common approach.
