How to Identify European Maple
Diffuse-porous pale wood with fine rays, high luster, and curly or burl figure — and how to tell it from American maple, birch, and true sycamore.

Start with color and luster. European Maple is pale — creamy white to light golden — with little contrast between sapwood and heartwood, and it has a distinctive bright, almost silky luster that plainer pale woods lack. Warmer reddish or golden-orange tones, as on this figured sample, usually indicate burl, mineral streak, or spalting rather than the wood's baseline color, which is near-white.
Read the end grain with a lens. European Maple is diffuse-porous: the pores are small, numerous, and evenly distributed with no ring of large earlywood vessels, so growth rings are subtle. The rays are fine and closely spaced; on a cleanly quarter-sawn face they produce a delicate, tight ray fleck, never the bold, large flecks of true sycamore (Platanus). Growth-ring boundaries are marked by thin, darker lines.
Assess figure and texture. The species is prized for curly (fiddleback/tiger) striping, quilt, blister, and burl. Under raking light, curl produces alternating light-and-dark bands that shift as the piece moves (chatoyance); burl shows clustered eyes and swirled maser patterning like the sample. The overall texture is fine and uniform, and the surface takes a lustrous polish.
Check weight and hardness by feel. The wood is moderately heavy and firm — medium-hard, around 1,050 lbf Janka — noticeably denser than pale softwoods and roughly on par with or a touch softer than American hard maple. It is essentially odorless when worked, with no distinctive scent, which itself helps rule out aromatic look-alikes.
Separate it from the common confusers. American hard and soft maple (Acer saccharum, A. rubrum) are almost indistinguishable by eye and often only separable by origin or lab testing; treat them as effectively interchangeable in the field. Birch is similar in color and also diffuse-porous but tends to have less luster, more subdued figure, and slightly different ray spacing. True sycamore/plane (Platanus) shows very prominent, large ray fleck and reddish-brown tones — quite unlike maple's fine rays. Beech is pinkish-brown with conspicuous small ray flecks and tiny dark ray lines on the end grain. Yellow poplar/tulipwood is softer, lighter in weight, and often greenish.

How do I tell European Maple from American maple?
You often can't by eye — European (sycamore) maple and American hard/soft maple are extremely similar in color, grain, and end-grain anatomy. Provenance of the board is usually the practical clue; definitive separation needs microscopic or chemical analysis.
What is the quickest field test to confirm maple over birch or beech?

Why is British 'sycamore' actually maple?
