How to Identify Red Alder

The quickest field test for Red Alder is to make a fresh cut and watch it change color. Freshly exposed alder is pale and almost colorless, then flushes a distinctive bright orange to rust-orange over minutes as it oxidizes — the color seen on this sample. Few common woods do this so quickly or so vividly, so a rapid pale-to-orange shift on a light, soft board is a strong alder tell.
Weight and hardness confirm it. Alder is noticeably light in the hand and soft — a thumbnail or fingernail presses in easily, and the wood feels lighter than a same-size piece of cherry, birch, or maple. There is almost no color difference between heartwood and sapwood; the whole board reads a uniform light tan to reddish-orange, unlike cherry or walnut which show a clearly darker heartwood.
Check the end grain and rays closely. Alder is diffuse-porous, so the pores are small, numerous, and evenly distributed with no ring of large early-wood pores — this rules out the ring-porous oaks, ash, and elm at a glance. Its most diagnostic anatomical feature is the presence of aggregate rays: what look like occasional single broad rays are actually tight clusters of many tiny rays, appearing as fine dark flecks or short lines on the surface, a trait alder shares with hazel and hornbeam but not with cherry or maple. The wood is largely odorless once dry.
The most common confusions are with cherry, birch, and soft maple, all light-to-reddish diffuse-porous woods. Cherry is harder, heavier, has a distinctly darker heartwood, carries small brown gum flecks, and a faint sweet almond scent — none of which alder shows. Birch is whiter, harder, and heavier, with a satiny sheen and no orange oxidation. Soft maple is paler, harder, and lacks both the aggregate rays and the fast orange color shift. When alder has been stained to imitate cherry or walnut (a very common practice), the giveaways are its light weight, its softness under a fingernail, and the uniform heartwood-to-sapwood color beneath the finish.
